Hey guys, gotta love first posts! I have been playing bass for about three years now and started out on an ibanez gsr 195 out of the starter pack then moved on to a G&L L-2000 tribute and I am GASSING for a new (at least new to me) bass. I am torn between an old 1980's MiJ Fender Jazz Bass Special (a la Duff) or a MiJ Standard Precision Bass. I love the styles of both but I must admit i am a tinkerer and while I love the looks and playability of the JBS, It being rear routed really limits the modding choices for me while with a P bass, I can mod to my heart's content under the pickguard but it means I will have to sacrifice the bridge J pup. Which sounds like the better bass to you and why?

First Fender Decision

You already know the answer, and I would say go for it! It's only your third bass and I have a feeling you'd be upgrading more in the future, so don't be bothered too much.
I am a tinkerer as well, but have long stopped modding my toys, I now prefer everything stock and if I want mods, I'd prefer to have them custom ordered through the original manufacturer, or buy something that has everything I wanted already installed. But I can only do it because I truly know what I want and am confident in my decisions, you're not there yet and I would say have fun at modding while you still enjoy it.

I'd go with the special. U can still mod em, not that I'd nessesarily change anything with it, but can't see the rear rout stopping too much. Heck, you "could" even throw a pickguard on it.

I would go with the P bass. I just happen to like P basses better than J basses. I think J basses sound better when played by themselves, but I think P basses sound better when played as part of a band.
ps. If you really want to mess around with mods, I would suggest to start with a $100 (or so) SX bass from Rondo Music. They are actually pretty good basses to start with and you can make them really good with a few mods.
The name is PeaveyBassman because my favorite bass amp sound is from peaveys and my favorite guitar sound is from the old fender bassman amps used by Duane Allman and others. Overall, I probably am going to choose the p bass just for the classic "sound in my head". I have hope it will turn put well plus, if i feel i need a j pup i can always have my local luthier route one out for me. Overall, I have a great feeling about the purchase i will soon be making and can't wait to share it soon!
