I was looking for a new amp when my old battered MIM P-bass died again, so it was time for a new bass. I took my time and played all the basses they had in the store, from the cheapest to the most expensive. In the end I chose a MIM classic 50's bass. I love the sweet tone, smaller frets and maple neck, I could have bought a more high end bass but the classic was the one I liked. You need to pick what is right for you no matter what anyone else says.
Personally I like shopping at independent stores as opposed to large chains. A good independent will set up your bass however you like it and give you more support. In my case the neck bent a little when I put some fat flatwounds on my new bass. I bought it back to them and they set me up again at no charge. It's also nice seeing the same people every time I go back to the store.
