Thats not that bad, I have a tube head that weighs 97 pounds. Its not a terrible price if the rack is included.

Thats a pretty good price for an amp, I might jump on that deal. As far as minimum impedance goes, the vast majority of amps are only safe down to 4 Ohms. I would only be looking at smaller cabs that are 8 Ohms, or bigger cabs that are 4.

You can go this route, just be sure to check that your pre amps output is suitable for your power amps sensitivity. The other thing to consider is that this isnt going to save you much weight once you add in a rack to house everything in. That said I use a Peavey IPR 1600 in one set up. 7 pound amp, 1600 watts of power.

Don't discount the GK MB500 for only 4 ohms. That means you can drive a single 4 ohm cabinet or 2 8 ohm cabinets. I use one and our band borders on prog (DT, Rush, Porcupine Tree) and it gives a great tone. That $300 would be well spent and leaves you $700 for cabs.
The only advantage I can think of for having an amp go to 2 ohms would be for two ohm-mismatched cabs (eg. a 4 & an 8 for example) if you had those quickly at your disposal. The 4 ohm cab would receive a larger proportion of the 500 watts so it had better be a strong cab.

Welcome aboard fellow NC bass guy! My wife is actually from White Lake not too far from you. Anyway.....

There is a TON of gear in our market right now. There are some deals to be had on the CL. Check out Myrtle Beach, Wilmington, and Raleigh for sure. Those are pretty active. If you see something interesting, feel free to PM me. If you see something up my way I'll be glad to go check it out for you.

But again, around here used is the way to go. I have done a lot of buying and selling lately. I've even been able to buy a few things just to check them out only to turn right around and sell them when I realized they didn't live up to the hype.

You get this head, the 8ohm 2-12 in Raleigh, and all you gotta do is get one more 2-12 to be killing it!

I understand that you said lightweight and I didn't ignore you per say. However, to get everything on your list (lightweight, pretty loud, two cabs, etc.) $1000 doesn't go very far. I can see it with one cab. But everything (3 pieces) being light AND good (an expensive combination) you could do a lot more with your money if you give on a spec or two. I'd have to say, to use a friend's term, that is pretty 'rippin'. I could work with that weight. I know guitar pod pro xt's are pretty light, so that combination in a rack would be more manageable.

I really would like to stay lean on the weight. I'm not against used at all. I've heard several bass set ups and I seemed to be drawn more to the guys who had the 8x10 cabs. I'd have to say that's why I'm leaning more to the 2 2x10s now. (Again, thank you for the advice of steering away from different drivers in a set up.)

If you do go with a power amp set up, you will have some versatility on cabs. Just remember its not just matching driver size, its matching the same model cab. This way things like power handling, frequency response, and sensitivity are all balanced. Oh and I got my IPR used for $225.

Just confirm the input sensitivity, lower the better. For example my IPR has a 0.7 v or so sensitivity.

See that link in the bottom of CLp's sig? The HPF let's you go hard without flapping your speakers to death. It cuts out the useless fundamental vibrations from your drop tuned 5 string, leaving juicy tone frequencies to rumble on.

1000 dollars gets you a good used rig. Giving up on light would get another level of loud or a nicer preamp.

As a general rule the more you spend on cabs the better. Cheap amps can sound good through good cabs but cheap cabs will ruin a good amp's sound.

I would go with 8 ohm cabs. You will have more than enough power to push those cabs to their limits, and you will have more expandability for future use.

Other than that, sounds good. you will have lots of options. Can run dual mono, or both on one channel and have the second channel for monitors or something.
