First motorcycle questions

speaking of Ninja 250's.... Link Removed - literally has everything on this bike, EVERYTHING, most step by step!!! it's one of the three reasons i bought the Ninja (i know you don't like the look of it)..

'turtle... you're gonna miss out.. these bikes are dirt cheap (even cheaper used when the 08's came out).. i know cause it's what i use...

it gets me to and from work, to the boxing gym, to visit my family and all over.. 80+miles a day on it.. at 55+miles per gallon i'm lauging at all the morons driving the big SUVs at the pump.... um, wait, i have an SUV, too :D

+1 to everything in this post. I loved my 250 and I would buy another one in a minute. Although my next bike will be a cafe racer built by me :) Too bad I am so broke.

Welcome to the club.

Just like everyone else has said; MSF, wear good gear, ride DEFENSIVELY!!! Always be aware of what is going on around you.

Good call starting out with a cheaper bike, 'cause everyone is right, you will put it down at least once. I started many years ago with a used Shadow, great bike. It definitely served its purpose until I moved on to bigger and better bikes. You can't beat some of those older Honda's for reliability.

Wear gear. Gloves, jacket, helmet, pants, even in the summer, without regard for the heat, please!
Buy jeans made for riding. Don't just wear any pants, because the first thing that touches the ground is your leg.

And you will go down. Everyone does, so you might as well be prepared for it!

When I went down my leg did not touch. I slid on my shoulder and smacked my head. But you are right, most of the time it is your leg that hits first, just not all the time.

Okay okay okay I'll take another look at them. But only for you, NJL!

that's interesting! good point

but most low-sides especially on sport bikes result in the leg going down as the bike falls on it. So, not always, but most of the time.

I have a friend who high-sided and nothing but his helmet got damaged.... :bassist:

I low sided. I still can't figure out how I landed. My back tire slide out on a corner (brand new tire + gravel on the road), my bike slide on the right side and my helmet cracked on the right side, but I got road rash on my left shoulder. My shirt was ripped on the right side and my leg didn't touch. The best that I can figure was that my bike slide on the pipe, leg and handle bar. Only cost me $20 to fix.

MSF is the way to go. Pay attention and just do it. Then when you get your bike, practice, practice, practice.

I do it on a Harley Sportster, one hell of a first bike. However, Honda Nighthawks can be had on the cheap. Honda Rebels as well...

That is a rather nice first bike. Honda makes some killer bikes, the shadows are sweet. I had a 600 shadow up to 120 mph, they are supposed to top out at 100. Was still nice and smooth, says a lot for how they are built.
