First preamp + DI pedal (2024)

Hello! First of all I would like to apologize if I'm opening a thread on a topic already discussed, it's my first time on the forum and besides English is not my native language.

I simply wanted to know the experiences of other users with some of the cheapest preamp pedals on the market, as I have had to move to a new city selling all my previous equipment. As I'm not sure if I'll have to move again for work, I don't want to accumulate amps that I won't be able to take with me, so I've thought about a preamp + DI pedal for home recording and playing in a small venue.

My options, due to the budget, are 3, and I hope this post will help newbies like me:
  • Palmer Pocket Amp: there are decent opinions about it, but also reviews that talk about a buzz.
  • Nux Melvin Lee Davis Preamp + DI: I'm not convinced by the apparent problem when connecting it to the PC.
  • Joyo Monomyth: what happens with this one is that I don't know the brand and I would like to read opinions from people who have used it.

Thanks to the whole community in advance, and, of course, if there were other recommendations close to 150 €, they are more than welcome.

I have played none of these and would suggest saving a little more for a sansamp of some kind. But if I had to choose one of the 3, my gut says the nux Melvin Lee Davis. I know some folks that swear by their joyo pedals…

I’m sure others with more experience will be along shortly with proper recommendations! Welcome to the forums my friend. I hope you enjoy it and find what suits you best!

Thank you very much for your advice. I guess I can always look at a second hand pedal, maybe that's a better option.

I'm delighted with the forum experience.

Don’t know about the Palmer.

With the Nux, the preamps just sounded duller than they should, to my ear anyway.

The Monomyth is a solid preamp. The EQ is decent and the drive can get a bit wild. Didn’t care for it at lower gain.

If going the Joyo route, I would suggest maybe looking at the Tidal Wave. It is a clone of the Sansamp BDDI v2 (mid control). I haven’t tried it, but sounds solid in the videos I’ve seen, but not quite the same as a BDDI.

I was not familiar with this model, and I like what I've been able to see. Thanks for the information, I will keep it in mind.
