first rig set-up suggestions

:help:Hi all, im a noob to the talkbass forums, been playing for a few years and have gotten to the point where im in dire need of a rig set up to start doing shows with my band. Though im a little inexperienced on the technical side of amp set-ups, ive been doing my homework and reading as much as i can on the subject.

so heres the deal, im going to base my setup around an Eden D410Xst which i, by the grace of the gods, am getting an absolute killer deal on. the problem is its just the cab which leaves me with the choice of trying to select and fund a head worthy of pushing it. or to run a rack style Pre-amp/amp setup which the current owner of the cab suggested to keep costs down. Im Extremely short on cash, so im seeking something that will get me up and going for the time being as i have no other source of amplification at the moment:crying: . i just need suggestions on what will work well with the cab im getting, i dont really even know where to start as far as selection. i did have a thought involving picking up just a poweramp for the time being, and utilize my macbook as a sort of preamp, which is essentially the way im doing it right now to get by ( totally okie, bass line in to laptop, run through garage band (effects applied), to a 500watt home stereo with 2 standalone powered 12" yamaha subs) you can flame me for that but its enough to keep up with our guitarists marshall stack.

anyway, i appreciate any help or suggestions.

What about used Peavey gear?

Great reliablity, fairly decent tone (but each to thier own) and cheap. If you want, further down the line you could add another preamp and just use the power amp section of the amp.

I generally make this suggestion because my first proper rig was a Peavey 410 with a Peavey Firebass, and I've still got it :)

i really like that GK head, seems like a good deal to me. ive got my eye out on the good ol' craigslist for used heads and will look for some old peavy gear. i do have another small question if i choose to run that GK head. will running a 500 watt amp on a cab rated for 1000watts harm anything? or will the cab just be starving for more wattage. for some reason i recall some info i may/maynot have read about possibly burning out speakers by running too LITTLE wattage through them .
