First time I ever saw a drummer do this

My first instinct would be to unplug his fan and then cut the plug wire to about 2" in length. In addition to some possible personal hang-ups, this guy probably hates sweating. That would show him a thing or two. :) Now that I've made a feeble attempt at humor, it's hard for me to relate. Since 2004 I've worked regularly with just two drummers, and they both preferred facing forward.

On the other hand, maybe this individual is the only drummer in town. This beats a drum machine. Well...maybe not.

I've worked with several drummers who set up that way. It is brilliant. I've also set myself up that way a lot. I like it.

The Yellowjackets set up like this. Drummer stage left facing in, keys stage right facing in, sax and bass between. Makes perfect sense. No reason for the drummer to be center stage - other than ego.

I have seen a drummer set his kit up faced that direction, but he did it on the stage...

The stage in that photo doesn't really look deep enough for a kit though, and I'm thinking maybe that's why he did it.

I'm guessing he was "making a point" but it's still a dick move.

Plenty of room on that stage for the drummer. That is patently unprofessional and unacceptable in my book. This is the epitome of the kind of musician I avoid like the plague.

Like I said, dick move. That would have been the last gig I played with him.

Topic of a thread over on TDPRI.

Supposably the drummer refused to set up any other way:roflmao:

Unless things have changed a whole lot since I was playing in clubs, part of the gig was figuring out creative ways to use the available space while minimizing infringement upon the dance floor. This setup does not live up to that ideal.
