First time poster in need of cab help.......

Hey there folks,,,,,I need some cab opinions.

I have just come back to the Bass from guitar/vocals and I am finishing up my rig. I play original heavy rock for the most part.

Rig consists of.....

2 Gibson SG basses flipped lefty(fireburst supreme and coral pink)
Genz Benz shuttle 6.0(ordered today)
Assorted pedals(fuzz/phase/delay...etc)

Just need the cab?S? My thoughts are between the Ampeg svt610, Avatar 410, 212 or a 210 on top of a 212, or something suggested here.:help::D

I would like to keep it at $900 or less......and thanx in advance.

**EDIT**....I would like something with a higher SPL(speaker sensitivity) and I'll be running @ 4ohms.

Hi,

i'm at this moment figuring out how to complete my lightweight rig (to use most of the time, might replace my more weighty rig if the sound is ok) and also have a Genz Benz Shuttly 6.0. I also found about Dr Bass and am seriously thinking about using the Shuttle with the 1260 Neo and a 112LF Neo.

Both cabs have decent SPL values, the 1260 (a 12", a 6" and a tweeter) can be used on it's own or with the 112LF for larger gigs.

Might also be interesting for you
for me, as i'm not living in the US it's a bit harder to get them here.. :S

Hey Lauryan,
Thanks for the suggestions. Those cabs look solid and the prices won't pulverize my wallet either.:) I am seeing 100-102dbs on them so I can believe they have the "loud factor" also.

Sounds like you're in need of some serious low end with the setup and type of music you're playing, am I right? I don't think a single 12" cab will cut it for you - even paired with a 6". That's probably better for more "mid-range" punch/runs, and not so much for slamming the E string and getting a thunderous response. :D

6x10 SVT could get you there - but you might like a more modern sound. I would see if you could check out any cabs in person once your shuttle shows up. The good thing about the shuttle is you can carry it to music stores in your bass case and try out cabinets pretty easily!

Personally, I love my SWR 8x8, but I know it's not the right cab for everyone.

Avatar certainly makes some solid cabinets - it would be tempting to try a 2x10 on top a 2x12. I use that config with my Eden setup. Only drawback is you'd have to buy 8 ohm cabinets - and if you ever just feel like running the 2x12 cab by itself, you're not running your amp at full power (though still, 300 watts will carry decent through a 2x12 cab).

What kind of gigs are you looking to play? I find a lot of times the room itself decides which amp/cab I am going to bring to a gig.

Hey ashtray,
Yes, I have a need for a good amount of lowend, but clarity is also a big must. That is why I think 212/210 theory may work out.

I tested the 3.0 shuttle through the svt610 today and it sounded pretty darn good, but it was missing something. I have to retest with the 6.0 as I think the pre-tube and extra wattage will fill in some blanks.

No shows yet, but they will consists of random bars/clubs and the occasional outdoor gig....99% will have a good PA.

Thanks

I get flak for being a comb filtering/phasing nazi, but instead of a 212/210, I think I would match the cabs. A 212/210 setup is used by a lot of people on here with much success, but every time I do something that's recommended by guys heavy into the science of audio like Bill Fitzmaurice, it represents an improvement in my tone. And he recommends using matched cabs with the same speakers to eliminate possible phasing issues. But again, people have been mismatching cabs for decades and have been very happy with their tones, too. So I would try it both ways if you can and make up your own mind about it, but I thought I'd throw that out as an option.

If I were you, I'd at least see if you can try a shuttle through one of the Genz Benz Neo 212T cabs. Your definition of "heavy" might be heavier than mine, though. :) It would make a nice, simple, easy to lug around rig.

Thanks for all the responses thus far. It's much appreciated and will help in my search for a fitting cab.

Hey Jaco who?,
My local shop had none of the neo cabs to test. :( I will look into them though.

BTW......My version of "heavy" is Late 60's and 70's hard rock meets 90's seattle stuff. Alice in Chains meets Cream.:hmm::eyebrow: haha....something around there.

+10

Shuttle 6.0 + NEOX-212T = no regrets.

Seriously, this combination has made my 4x10 basically obsolete, and it's a darn nice 4x10. You can get whatever sound out of it you want, from thick and warm to snappy and modern. I play in a project that swings from jazz to metal to prog to southern rock and it does it all. Plus, the entire setup weighs less than 55 pounds. That is less than my old rack without the 100 pound 4x10.

Hey hasbeen,
Why yes.....It's the House of Guitars in Rochester NY(IMO...the greatest shop around). I am probably going to have them order one tomorrow though as it is in my price range and I can't seem to find a bad word about the cab. It should be a choice fit for the shuttle 6.0 I ordered through them today.

Thanks
