Hi there everyone, so I just got accepted into a year long course on instrument making and repair, which i start next week. For my project for this course, as ill probably only have time to make one instrument, i really want to try build a ukulele bass and i was hoping the wise heads of TB would be able to help me along, particularly anyone who has built a U-bass of their own.
I do realise that for a first build a U-bass may be a bit ambitious, but ive really got my heart set on it because i plan to go travelling for a long time in the next couple of years and really dont like the idea of not being able to play while im away. So i want a nice small bass that i can bring around the world with me, and so a U-bass is what i need.
The plan at the moment is for a 20-22" scale acoustic with a piezo in the bridge, really i just need to know if theres any special considerations while making a body for such a small instrument producing such low frequencies. Also is there any way to get metal strings in that scale length or is my only option to buy strings from Kala (i would like to put a magnetic pup near the neck if it was possible). Of course if theres anything else i need to know, lay it on me.
I did try searching but found no build threads for U-basses, and kala dont give any info that i can see about their methods. Also i plan to do a build thread here for the project.
