Double Bass First upright day!

Well you all may have your chance one day to say you told me so. But i couldnt turn down that trade for the 1/2 size Framus upright. So i am the new owner to a 1950's Framus 1/2 size ply-wood bull fiddle ;)

So things i learned to day.

Wow this thing is huge! (Use to Mustang bass)

I dont know how to aproch this instrument ;)

And the current strings are a little rough on my plucking finger :(

Better than me. For the last two years. Ahem.

Ballet is a group activity so she might do better there than music lessons. That said, there's no reason she can't bang around on a cheap classical guitar while she thinks about following daddy onto the doublebass.

That's the advice I got from my buddy who works as a public school music teacher.

I like the bass. The finish is real rough. And she has plenty of nicks and dings. Has some repairs and the neck was shimed.

But she seems solid! Has new adjustable bridge, new tail piece wire, and finger board plained. He said it has been set up but I think the strings could be lowered. But then again I keep the very low on my BG.

If I can get the hang of this beast I would like to look into new strings, pickup, and a setup!

Just wish I could find F on the finger board:( I can't get my clip on tuner to pick it up on the E string.LOL

Any tips, suggestions, or links for a new comer?

Don't know what brand they are. I do know they are steel flatwounds. As for why a half size. Well I was selling a 1965 Ampeg SB-12. With possible trade for upright. Well I was not getting any cash offers but got a few upright offers.

One was a 3/4 ceroma bass with a damaged bottom. Another was a 3/4 engleheardt that was all out of wack! Bass bar was bulging, bridge was twisted, neck had a undisclosed break repair apon inspection, and so on.

Then I got the offer for the 1/2 size Framus. He was very upfront with the pros and cons of the bass. I told him I would like to look at it. And while waiting to set up a time to see it I searched for info on old 1/2 size Framus basses and came up empty handed.

So when he brought it I was very skeptical. But I fell for it! The mojo the size the thin neck. It just felt right. I know he got the better end of the deal but I got something I wanted to try! And if it doesn't work out then I will sell it. I know it is harder to sell a 1/2 size but then again I was unable to sell my Ampeg.;)
