Double Bass Fitting a pickup

I did not find anything with the search or newbie links. I have got my hands on a pickup built by a local who builds pickups. It's of the kind you fit in under your "side wing" on the bridge. However, the I need to get a bigger gap. Do i just take one of those sand paper on a stick and start working? and if i cannot fit a sandpaper on a stick?

I'm about to replace the bridge on my plywood bass anyways sometime, so if i screw up it's no biggie

EDIT: It's very similiar to an underwood pickup.
