Flakes

So I made a person an offer on an item that was a reasonable offer (within 10% of asking price). The person responded within 24 hours with "I'll let you know tomorrow", tomorrow came and I followed up and have not heard back. Why are people such flakes, if it's no, just say no. Have had similar cases where people flake out. Be courteous and straight forward.

Flake?? No more like poor form. In marketing you should always set expectations before closing a conversation. If you are a buyer, a question like, “Will you please let me know if this item has been sold to someone else, as I have some other instruments I’m considering. Please text me to…...” Hopefully you will get a commitment from the seller. Even so with a commitment, it’s quite possible even with a commitment you may not be notified. For all you know, he may have had 100 inquiries and calling them all back is just is not a realistic expectation. Not to mention he may have changed his mind about selling it.

What is a flake?
Flakes:
Don't do no good
They never be workin' when they oughta should
They waste your time
They're wastin' mine

California's got the most of them
Boy, they got a host of them
Swear to God they got the most (Yeah)
At every business on the coast (Yeah)
Swear to God they got the most (Yeah)
At every business on the coast
They got the Flakes

As explanation and not as excuse, we are all getting hit all day every day with multiple forms of incoming. I’m sure people have the best of intentions when they let some of it get away from them.

The OP makes an offer...the seller has the wherewithal to respond within 24 hours...the response is "I'll let you know tomorrow"...the OP gets no next-day answer, even after following up...

I'm puzzled by the "I'll let you know tomorrow" answer. If you're selling something, and if you're accepting offers, why would one day be the difference in accepting or not accepting an offer? Most people selling something have a good idea of what they consider to be an acceptable price, so why not just say yes or no to the offer? If someone else had made a previous offer, the seller could have said he's waiting to see if that deal will go through. A simple explanation would have been a lot better than leaving the OP hanging.

IMO, it sure seems like flaky behavior, and I didn't interpret the OP's post as making a broad character judgment.

Keeping one's word is a struggle for all of us to one degree or another. Sometimes life just prevents us from following through, but that is typically rare. Usually, it is because people just don't value it highly. And I'm glad, because it makes those of us who do follow through that much more appreciated. ;)

It's 2025. Thank the "beauty" of texting and social media.

I have had many experiences when inquiring about an item for sale, where the seller doesn't respond in a window that works for me.

I generally have the opinion that if you post something for sale, please don't do it just before leaving on vacation or similar.

But then, it has happened to me as a seller-- I've become distracted shortly after posting an ad and may not end up responding for hours. This is rare but changed my attitude regarding being on the other end if the situation.
