Flat wounds on Fender Kingman

I recently purchased a Fender Kingman acoustic electric. Being an upright player with a flat wound preference, I purchased a set of D'Addario ECB81 Flat Wounds regular light gauge (.045 - .100). Unfortunately I'm having difficulty keeping the peg in place when I get the E string close to pitch. I expect I'll encounter the same issue when I switch the other strings. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Are you making sure the peg is not pushing down on the ball end?

Or, is this a case of the silked end being too thick to fit through the hole properly?

There are flats that don't have silk at the ball end, such as La Bella DTF/LTF and GHS Precision Flats.

I created a bend at the ball end to ensure it isn't in the way of the peg/pin and both the ball end and pin fit into the hole. It seems that the string size might be too large for the groove in the pin.

That's the problem with the silked ends on some flats. As a former acoustic guitar player, I used to have problems with strings with silk at the ball end.

GHS Precision Flats 45-95 or La Bella 760FX (39-96) might be a better choice as they have no silk at the ball end and easier to fit through the groove in the pin.

Easiest solution is removing the silk (X-Acto, cigarette lighter, or some combination of the two); next-easiest is widening the pin slot (you could buy a replacement bass bridge pin set if you don't feel like modifying the stock ones.

Thank you for the suggestions. My boyfriend was able to get it to work by ensuring the end ball was up against the inside face of the bass before jiggling the end pin in. I am so happy switching from the phos bronze to flat wounds. No more metal strings hitting the frets and no more sliding finger sounds!!

You could also buy single strings for a custom set. I have always wanted a Bass of that type and never considered this issue.

Thx for this, I had the same problem. Burned off the silks, still had to sand the bridge pin for the E string a bit, but all worked well!
