I'm planning on getting some flats for my P-bass I would like a Hard Rock/ Motown sound but also need it to cut through the mix any recommendations??

Cant go wrong w/ Fender flats for a Pbass, lots of people use D'addario chromes too or Rotosounds. The Roto's and Fender's tend to be a bit on the tight side where tension is concerned. I've absolutely fallen in love however with the Dean Markley flats, great balance, SUPER smooth feel, not too much tension and plenty of thump to boot. Take your pick man, you really cant go wrong w/ any of them.

I have my fretless Pbass and both of my fretted fivers strung with Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats and love 'em.
Very nice strings, nice silked ends, really classes up the joint. It gives a nice jamersonbutler sound.+1
Just the right amount of thump and brightness. Very nice in a band situation. Great tension too.
I've got GHS Precision Flatwounds on my Fender P. I really like those, but then I haven't tried any other flats...yet...
I like Chromes too, they are my second choice for a P. To me the Fenders have a little less high mids and a little more thump, though.
A word of caution: I cannot return to roundwounds. I am hooked by the feel of flatwound strings.
I use Ernie Ball Flatwounds, they come in a good variey of guages, even has a .130 for low B. I like "GROUP I"(55's). They are quite bright when new, got some other brand a guitar center once and they were dead sounding even compared the the Ernie Balls I had on for six weeks.
I also tried Steve Harris signature Rotosounds but I found them to be stiff and had a bit of a gummy feel when new.

The original electric bass string is the LaBella flatwound and it turns your P-bass into a thump machine. Most of my basses are strung with those.
My other basses are strung with Rotosound Jazz Flats (RS77LE) that are dead. When new they are very bright and clanky, when they age they mellow out and become very smooth and midrange-y. Definitely not thump strings though.
