Flats on J or P bass?

Short answer: yes!

Long answer: no two basses are 100% similar, so try flats on both and go with your ears and fingers.

been too lazy to put flats on the p, but i did get a pretty nice tone yesterday with the foam block i cut and palm muting whilte playing with my thumb

What are you playing on the two basses and what sound are you after? Do you prefer the feel of some kind of particuliar string? I've always felt that the feeling when you play is the most important, as you can get a thuddy tone with rounds and a bright clanky sound with flats. If it feels good it's easier to play the way you like! Some prefer a high or low tension, or stiffness, or a soft or rough texture. What do you prefer? Get that on both basses!

I have always subscribed to the idea that P basses get flats and Jazz's get rounds. Over forty years or so of playing this has worked fine. However, inexplicably, flats on my MIM FSR (ash body) Jazz sound incredible and I am loathe to change them!
Not to go rogue here, but the FSR series really is fine...Fender flats, 45-100 medium light work well.
