Flatwound Club

can i take number 666 (maiden fan)
All this talk of Iron Maiden, I think Eddie is lurking about, yes not a flat wound man,but those Steve Harris swingbass flats are awesome clanky bones strings gauges 50.75.95.110. You can get some very low action with them , barely touch them and its clangtime yet stiff anuff to get a good plucked note, good job Steve you should now as long as you have been on stage, oh and your daughter that sings Steve, smoken just like IRON MAIDEN!

Hello all, thought I'd bump the thread and post some thoughts.

I've been a flat/tape concert for probably 3-4 years now. I have Fender 9050 45-100 on my Schecter Raiden Special-4; La Bella DTF on my Squier Standard (read: NOT Vintage Modified) Precision V and D'Addario Tapes on my Inanez AEB5E acoustic bass.

So far I've had the Fenders for about 4 months and I'm really liking the tone. That being said, I'm giving serious thought to the new Ernie Ball Cobalt Flatwound set for my Schecter; I want to try the 40-95 set!

The La Bella DTF feel really good on my hands, but I don't love the E-string. The B is okay. Mostly I am feeling lukewarm about that Squier in general and thus don't play it much.

I think the Tapes on my ABG will likely stay there forever. At least until I get the itch to try a new set of Tapes..

Happy thumping!

From Chrome to 760FL till 9050L .
I hate myself too late to get 9050L.:roflmao:

I love the sound of 760FL, fuller D & G string. But when in mix , it just sound dry to my ear. Sometime it sound quite not mix with some kind of music.

Otherwise, 9050L is bright when it fresh, BUT comfirm not the Bright-Kind like Chrome have.It more open sound & airly. 9050L is really easy mix with anykind of music style.

More than a week now, 9050L sound start become warmer & little dark, but all string settle even & still balance from string to string. The E still clear, G sound little fuller.

My bass guitar is just a cheap Squier CV 60P, with Fender Pure Vintage 63 pup, 225P .047uf Orange Drop, 1/4 tone open value, Fender Rumble V3 200/115 combo(with Vintage button engage) and offcause 9050L flatwound, produce the tone Not too Modern, Not too old school, just a right P sound i looking for.:)

I've just started my conversion process/experiment by installing a Fender 9050L set on my Precision a few days ago. Liking the experiment so far. My previous strings on that bass have been RS66 and then Black Beauties -- guess I get mellower as I age, or something..

No, not mellower...wiser. Go out in the "house" and give a listen.

I've never been a convert. I always wanted that sound. It wasn't until I realized my desire to play bass (and to finally be able to get a lefty at a reasonable price) that flatwound strings are what that percussive, deep, ear-drum pillowing sound coming from JPJ's, Macca's, James Jamerson's, Duck Dunn's and Carol Kaye's bass was all about.

So count me as #1971

Anyone try the EB Slinky flats yet?

Me! I ordered the 45-130 set and strung up my Schecter Raiden Special-4 BEAD. So far I'm a big fan. Nice, low tension (but not too low) and a very nice, present tone. Not zingy, not thumpy- just right.

So I've got EB Cobalt flats on my Schecter and La Bella DTF on my Squier (see post above.)

Now I'm getting the itch to put some flats on my Ibanez ABG. Thinking GHS 40-95. Hmm.

Both of my main basses are now wearing flats.

My MIA P has Chromes ECB81 (light gauge) and my MIM Standard P has ECB82 (medium gauge).

The reasoning for the different gauges was in hopes of bringing the sound of the two a bit closer to each other. Seemed to work, but the MIM has a hotter pickup than the MIA.

Now to get a set for my third in line.

I've got a set coming in the mail. They'll be replacing some Boomers that I've not been a fan of at all. I tried the boomers as an experiment, and the combo of boomers->precision->15" cab has been nothing short of the muddiest sound ever.

I'm hoping the flats having a little higher tension will put a nice mid-forward punch in the sound and clean it up a bit.

Last couple of months I experimented with strings. I tried 3 roundwounds (DR LoRider, Rotosound Swing bass66 and Fender pure nickels) tapewounds (Fender nylons) and flatwounds (Rotosound Monel flatwounds).
I must say thatI adore Swing bass strings, really gnarly, mid heavy, growly with lot of bite but in the mix things are rather different, I get lost easely and there is always that bright and twangy uper reggister (D and G strings) and I dont like that. Few days ago I restrung my Peavey with Rotosound Monels again, now they are old 8 months or so, oh boy, what a great sound, now they are beautifully mellow with defined mids, sweet and buttery highs and nice warm low end, beautifull sounding D and G string is really refreshing, now I sound great in the mix and they sound great with little bit of overdive. So back to flats after all. ;)

Another flatwound enthusiast, I just realized I've never posted here.

My first encounter with flats - D'A Chromes ECB84 on my old MIM P-bass. (Regrettably no longer in my possession.)

Then another set of ECB84 on my J-bass, which stayed on there for the first 4 yrs., followed by an 18-mth "detour", flirting with rounds. Now back on track with Fender 9050L, my beloved J is happy again!

Meanwhile, I still have the 4-yr-old Chromes neatly tucked away, as well as a brand new set of La Bella 760FL still in the sealed package, waiting to be tried on a hopefully-soon-to-be-acquired P-bass.

Just put Labella 760FL's ( .043 to .104) on my shortscale.....

a lighter gauge...but not really noticeable in that regard, in comparison to D'addario ECB 81's.....they seem to feel about the same in stiffness and playability.

Just got a set of ECB80's that I'm going to put on my Ibby which currently has the ECB81's on it.
