If it's a typical violin bass, make sure to get medium scale strings, even though the bass is a short scale.

I have tried medium scale Chromes and the La Bella 50-100 flats on my Hofner Club, and have liked them both.

I also really like rounds on that bass; they sound great in the mix with a band I play with. Lots of bottom, but just enough top end to cut a little.
