Flatwounds on stingray

This is probably the best thing i ever did to my ray, gives me that real punchy thumpy bass sound, cuts through the mix. Anyone like this as much as me?
I had a Sterling. Had I have kept it I would have put flats on it to smooth out the tone.
Yes, I like them so far. First gig with them this weekend. I'm trying D'addario Chromes on a pre-Ernie Ball. Which flats are you using, and is your Ray a 2 band eq or 3?
Flats on a 'Ray? Sure, that's what Leo shipped the earliest ones with. GHS Precision Flats to be exact. And that's what Bernard Edwards used on his 'Ray- when asked what kind of strings he used he replied "What kind of strings come on a Music Man?".
Mine came with a set of GHS Brite-Flats when I got her around 1979 or so.

I have TI Jazz Flats on my Ray35 and love them. However, I'm a sucker for a full punchy Sade type tone.
Most of the studio recordings of Bernard Edwards feature him playing his Precision -- he may have used his BC Rich some too (and a G&L on the Power Station stuff). On the live stuff I've heard with the Stingray he is clearly using rounds. IMO, flats on a Ray sound better than flats on a Jazz and not as good as flats on a Precision.
If I were to have a ray, I would probably use some GHS brites, and then work my way down the 'brightness' scale- then chromes, then TIs, then the next etc. until I found the right mix. It's always been a favorite sound of mine
Chic's 1st album was done with a P. Chic's 2nd album, Sister Sledge & Diana Ross stuff were recorded with a Ray.
He quite possibly used his Ray for a few individual cuts, but I think he was still primarily using his Precision in the studio -- like most sane bass players of the day

Personally, never considered it. To me, Slinky's + Stingray = perfection.

I have 2 'Rays-the pre-EB has Sadowsky flats and the EB has TI Jazz Flats. I don't think I'll ever go back to rounds; the flats get such a big, punchy sound and they even out the treble, which can be a little much with rounds for my taste.
I've heard very good things about the Sadowsky flats. I should breakdown and try a set sometime. What I really need is another SR5 so I can have rounds and flats.
