I play with a pick and have always used roundwounds. Now, I'm thinking of trying flats. Can I continue to use a pick with them? Many thnaks.

Hell yes. One of the sweetest tones IMO. I've started trying to use a pick on my flat outfitted P just because of the Barney Miller theme tone.
I've always played with a pick and just recently put flats on my Nordy VJ5 and I'm in love with that "woody and thunky" vintage 70's tone a la Tiran Porter from the Doobie Brothers

Just started using a pick for the first time about a year ago. Only on one or maybe two songs. BUT, I just did a TX songwriters hoot night where we were the backing band... had to learn about 30 songs for the thing, and ended up on using a pick on a lot of them. The pick with flats will be making it's way into more of my playing.
It's a great sound. Thump!! Very percussive. Use a little palm muting to can cop that upright sound.

So did John Lodge of The Moody Blues and Andy Roarke of The Smiths. I use a pick with flats on my P in the Tom Petty tribute band I'm in. Works fine.
Yes, I imagine that would be great in a Tom Petty tribute band. I'm not sure if Ron Blair uses flats or not, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he does.

As one who doubles on the upright, I'm not sure how upright-ish it sounds, but it's a great technique for a few reasons. I like the dynamic range, and it's great for locking into a groove with the drummer.
String it with flats, get a pick (try various thicknesses and shapes, even an autoharp felt pick gives a distinctive bass sound.

Graham Maby (of Joe Jackson's bands) got a great sound picking flats on a Jazz bass....and yes, of course Sir Paul can't be ignored...
Indeed he does...now. I was thinking of his early work with Joe. There he was using flatwounds, Jazz Bass, with the treble turned all the way up...or so he's said in interviews...
All my basses have flatwounds and I will use a pick whenever I need to stay in sync with a complex rhythm or want a sound that cuts through the mix a little better.
I'm picking about one out of twenty songs on Chromes and Ernie Ball flats. Sounds great. It's worth while trying different pics regarding material and thickness. They all sound and feel a little different.
