Flea Bass.

is he going to play them on stage?

His whole objective was to have kids playing the actual bass he himself plays so it would be rather hypocrite of him not to play those basses on stage. Although I'm pretty sure that his personal basses will probably have Bartolini pickups and active electronics.

That's it. A good quality bass with an exterior that begs modifications. It'll grow with the kid that buys it. Down the road you'll see these with stencils, stickers and pickguard modifications - And it will sound good. Then if you can find one in 20 years that's still all-original it'll be worth something.

I´ve been a RHCP-fan for the past 23 years, and I´ve seen Flea play a bunch of basses, including some weird stuff from the mothers milk-time.
I have to say its just super-great that he left Modulus to go ahead to make the fleabass of his own(if that was the case...)
It says its an affordable bass that almost anyone can get their hands on, and that´s sooooooo cool!
My first bass(the only one I could afford when I was 14), was a crappy Hondo. To be honest it was not a good relationship, but it gave me something to play, and also a wish to save up for something better, wich I did.
Honestly I don´t think Flea would put his name on this if it was just crap. The guys probably the coolest bassplayer ever(at least to me) and the very NAME Flea is a brand saying Quality.
Its probably far from a Modulus or a music man, but great music has been made on cheap instruments before..
An expensive instrument wont help a poor player but I think a player with a good wish and some vivid ideas can create magic with a cheap instrument...

You know, I think we all need to stop and look at the pic of him and the kids up there and ask ourselves who he's REALLY making this bass for...

Do you see ANY adults in there? Some of you might think it's a marketing gimmick but Flea really loves kids and helping them learn about music and succeed in it as well. This bass is more than likely made for kids so they can get a decent, budget instrument that won't have horrible intonation or make them feel discouraged by the poor quality affecting their playing abilities.

I applaud him for doing this, we have tons of basses that fit us perfectly that get churned out with all types of different pickups, preamps, neck sizes and wood types....for a kid who knows nothing about all that stuff, this seems ideal. Most kids parents wont shell out money for a setup on an instrument and most kids would be scared to try and do it themself. So everyone can have their opinion and like them or not, but lets not be selfish and diss this when it really wasn't meant for us older guys with longer arms and fingers. I can think of about 3 basses that are made that would fit my sister's hands (shes only 4'11" tall, so she has tiny hands) so adding another one to the market is nothing but good in my opinion....even better if it's actually a decent instrument.

Just my $0.02 =/

Whatever it takes to get an instrument into a kids hand... other than a Rock Band or Guitar Hero controller! :bassist:

I personally love the colorful ones, and who knows, they may sound amazing!

I think they look like fun. The only one that really interests me is the "Wild One" (black + white) because I'm boring like that (if they had a grape purple one, though, I'd be all over it) but I'd love to try a short-scale - I've recently begun considering replacing my Yamaha with a good short-scale, and the more I play them in stores, the more I like the idea. If they sound good and have a reasonably fast neck, I could see myself strapping a Fleabass on. I guess I'm still a kid at 21. I could definitely see getting one and personalizing it - and I think that's part of the idea.

i would really like to see a review and listen to some sound samples. i think that they look awesome. the only beef that i have with them is that, as it was said before, the pickguard seems to be glued on. I think that a removable pickguard would be better. i can see the pickguard starting to peel a bit after lots and lots of playing.

also, that would be a great customization option. being able to swap out that pickguard for another color would be cool.

i appreciate the effort FLEA. rock on...

I like the 62 jazz bass and really enjoyed the AVRI series I used to own. If I was to nitpick, I would say to Fender to put a little more pigment in the paint. This color looks like a pair of underwear that was washed accidentally with a pair of red socks. Have a look at what Shell Pink is supposed to look like:

SHell Pink Fender - Google Search

This thread was originally about the actual brand "Fleabass" just FYI. Not the fender signature model.
