Flea Don't Sound Like Flea No More...

To be fair flea's in ur face funk style basslines have really mellowed down since BSSM.

N I agree with a previous poster, peoples styles change slightly and u can't keep playin tge same for albums and albums ppl will get bored.

I hvnt really enjoyed any chilis stuff past Cali, maybe a couple of tracks from by the way.

It isn't fair to judge tone from a youtube video or commercial radio single in my opinion. Anyways I love almost everything the chilli peppers have put out save their first album, my favorites being stadium arcadium and one hot minute. You have to appreciate every album differently and be glad they didn't take the same formula and regurgitate it for 20 some years. That said I didn't really like rain dance maggie, didn't hate it either, but I'm looking forward to the rest of the album and will probably buy it.

I was a huge fan until By The Way ... the tone I can get over it but the playing no ... It was fun that the bass line was as important as the guitar line for the melody in the song. Now he plays like any other boring pop bass player.

And the ... I've grown up so I don't need to play as much argument is very lazy IMO. Les Claypool doesn't play simple pop bass, he still play his crazy slap part or Vic Wooten still play his accrobatic part.

Just got done checking out the new video and well, the Frusciante impersonator did a better job of blending in than FLea's new sound IMO. Nice big, fat, round, vintage style tone but did not sound like Flea. Where is the GK grind, the bite, the edge, that killer funk staccato? I don't know, maybe I am just biased but the switch to Acoustic just doesn't work for me but Flea must do what's best for Flea I guess.

Are you guys just assuming he used Acoustic amps on the new recording? I know it is very common for him to blend a mic with a direct line, but if i am assuming anything it's that he used a B-15 with a DI

He only got his new Acoustic USA 360/361's in time for their tour rehearsals. Any video (other than the recent live ones) would have used the "album" track. The new album was recorded with his GK's.

Was going to make a comment like this one...so +1

Unless there is inside info or they release a vid showing "in studio" stuff, its all speculation on what amps/cabs were used.
He could have used 2 diff amps and 2 different cabs in the studio and blended them together. Those may or may not even include the Acoustic stuff.

If there is a video of Flea saying he used Acoustic to record the new album that would be cool to see.......

He didn't have the Acoustic gear in time for the studio recordings.

Flea is really onboard with the Acoustic USA stuff. He contacted them and bought 12 amps! Then dyed his hair blue.

I am sure that it will change some tone live - but if you are going direct through the PA - how much? Plus - the new amps have a mid range horn so freq response is better than the old W bins. Thus - he should be able to dial in any tone he wants.

Personally - I was not much a a RHCP fan - until now. But then - I am into the idea of the new Acoustic to.

I think it's cool they're still making records and have somehow kept it all together, but their music after BSSM doesn't do much for me, through no fault of their own. Just checked out the new single, and I like the new tone better for my own personal tone tastes these days, but it is a departure for Flea. The chorus of that song is pretty weak though. Newsciante does a good job too and much cooler than Navarro, but John's playing is pretty special to me.

I owe Flea my passion for playing bass, I only played wanky guitar until I was about 14, then my friend gave me a dub of Mother's Milk...and then WOW! LETS ROCK!

I much rather listen to the old school RHCP when George Clinton helped them out in the recording process. I realize every band at some point has to expand their musical creativity and sound but, I too think they have lost something ever since one hot minute came out. they seem to blow it with their first single releases, they haven't impressed me since blood sugar... and even then suck my kiss wasn't their best song on that album to release first. also a quick side note: Mr. Kiedis HAS TO SHAVE OFF that god awful 70s porn mustache!!!

He didn't have the Acoustic gear in time for the studio recordings.

That doesnt mean that the studio where the new album was recorded didnt have Acoustic gear already there! Weather it was used or not in the recordings is not for anyone to say until proof surfaces

ALOT of pros have switched to gear that they were exposed while in the studio to record.

Flea could have been a fan of Acoustic for years, and could have personally owned Acoustic gear for years....but locked in with GK he obviously cant publicly use/advertise Acoustic, until now
