I think it's amazing that at age 46 he decided to start formally training his playing skills.

Thats pretty cool. He seems to have a really genuine love of music. I've heard him talk about playing trumpet with real passion as well. I think it's cool when a guy who is regarded as an innovator still feels he has more to learn. It probably shows why he is so good.

Sounds like great fun.

A cpl of friends of mine went to the US in the 90's to study at Musicians Institute, they ended up sharing ensemble with their fellow student, Ivan, from White Zoombie (who apparently had a hard time not using the double kicks when playing bossa, and hit the drums way too hard even when playing as soft as he could...). They called him "Ivan the terrible" ...

They had a great time together and there's a bunch of funny stories too, studying is fun no matter when in life you decide to do it.

The guy owns the Silverlake Music Conservatory.
He "started" his formal training as a kid.
He's FURTHERING his education.
Studying jazz theory, I believe. Good for him.

All of the best musicians I know know that they have more to learn. When someone thinks they can't be taught anything anymore, that's a sign they ain't as good they think they are. Not a big fan, but I know he is good. Kudos to Flea...

That news has been out for a while now. He said that one of the reasons they're taking a break as a band is because Flea wants to basically re-learn bass in a whole new way.
