Judging from the well worn Rumours vinyl sitting in my parent's collection, you're probably right.
I'm actually a huge fan of the Buckingham/Nicks FM, along with the Green era. "Dreams" has a great simple line, so do "Don't Stop", "I'm So Afraid", and "You Make Loving Fun".
I have played "Dreams" as well. The line that McVie plays that plays off of Nicks' vocal in the third verse "wrapped around your dreams" part is one of my favorite bits to hear and play. I listen to the song in anticipation of that part.
A few years ago Mike Mills from REM was interviewed in Bass Player mag and he said that he wonders "what would John McVie play" when asked about constructing bass lines.

It's funny...as a guitar player for over 30 years, I wouldn't be caught dead playing Fleetwood Mac. But since becoming a bass player, I find myself listening to (and liking) many more different genres of music, including groups like FMac.
I always liked the bass riff from 'The Chain', and recently saw them on a VH1 Classic concert. Watched McVie as much as they'd show him, and was definitely impressed with many of the basslines, even on their mellower stuff.

I'm a fan. When I first started to learn to play bass, my mom bought me a Mel Bay Bass Book and the sheet music to Rumors. I'm still influenced by McVie's style.
I went to see them back in June, still an awesome live act.

Nothing fancy in the bass department, but I love the song The City.

Ha! Beat me to it! I love that little funky thing. So simple, yet so effective, and it nails the feel of the lyrics. Like he's wrapping those two notes around that line or something, then right into the chromatic thing. Great tone too. He really does a lot of cool things with rhythm while only playing like two notes.
Another one of my favorites is second hand news. Has nothing to do with bass, but you gotta have some balls to take what sounds like it should have been a guitar lick and speak it...
"Do it! Bow bow bow bow b-bow bow." ... and then have the nerve to tack on "D-doot dootly do". And the best part? It totally works!
I'm 28 and never liked Fleetwood Mac but Pandora turned me on to them and now I'm hooked. Dreams, You make lovin fun, gold dust woman, gypsy, riannon, I don't know their whole catalog but those are some that pop out at me. There is still some stuff I can't stand cause it's been played so much (the chain)
, but I can at least recognize the greatness.
