To follow up, the chromes are great! It's only a .02 increase in gauge, so maybe just the fact that they're flats as opposed to half rounds would explain the additional tension.

A flatwound string at the same diameter should have more mass per unit length than a roundwound and thus a bit higher tension at a give pitch. Gotta love those Chromes!
