Double Bass Foam bass trunks for airline transport?

Does anyone have any experience with flying a bass under the newest airline baggage rules? Most airlines I see are refusing anything over 80 inches combined measurement. That would even preclude a removable neck bass in 2 separate cases....
I just fedexed a bass to the east coast, removable neck, custom crate deal, heavy.... 98 lbs. I'm curious as to weather anyone has a new strategy, or are the airlines making an exception for musical instruments?
The new rules went into effect earlier this month..... (May 08)

I am in a real bind needing to buy a foam case for a move to Australia. Crystalcello has jerked me around saying they were expecting to have them in December. I am move Feb 7th and I am having no luck finding a foam case. I have a 3/4 Kay. Any ideas? Thanks...Ross

Does anyone know where I can get a foam flt case for 3/4 Kay bass. I need one in a hurry. Crystalcello promised they would hve one and it is not in yet. I need help I am moving to Australia in Feb. Thanks...Ross

I just sold one of these last week in TB Classifieds. I used mine to bring a carved Shen back from China with me. To be safe, I removed my bridge and dropped my soundpost before packing the bass from Shanghai to LA. I did this to be extra safe. I brought the case to transport the bass with intention to sell the bass and case too. A one way trip, just one set of flights. All went well, the bass and case made it fine except for one of the handles getting ripped off, pretty flimsy stitching. Both the bass and the case got sold fast. I think the guy who bought my case intends to use it for storage mostly, he's not a working pro who flys to gigs. I feel my good experiance was just a matter of good luck mostly. One could probably use one of these once in a while on a plane and get away with it before something bad happens, you just never know.
