Focusrite Scarlett Solo line noise

Sorry if its a stupid question...

My inst port is noisy. If I place my hand on top of the device, the noise decreases. I have two thoughts...

First is, does my laptop need to be plugged into clean power?

Next is, could this be related to the type of cables I use. I don't believe I have a balanced 1/4" cable.

What type of noise is it? Is your bass noisy. Do you have some type of ground problem? Start trouble shooting by trying a different cable from your bass to the inst input.

I think I'm good now. I have never used "balanced" cables for anything before... they just look like stereo cables to me. But once I used one of those cables direct to my bass, the noise went away.
