fodera alteratives?

So I was thinking about getting a fodera (NYC deluxe with J pickups), but I have started to see that a lot of people think that foderas are not worth the money. So my question is, what other high class manufacturers are there, that build instruments as well as fodera (maybe even better) that are generally more well recieved by the public and cost what they are legitimately worth?

thanks!

Ps. it will be about a year before I can actually afford a fodera, so there is lots of time for me to change my mind!

There are many, many "high class" builders, at price points from $2K to $50K USD. "Worth" and "public perception" are dreams, vapors, illusions, headaches, a bad smell.

Do not get hung up on smells and fogs, and do not get hung up on the idea of spending a bankroll on something that other people will admire and covet for being "high class", and at the same time they will not dismiss as "overpriced".

i'd say use the time you have to try plenty instruments from many builders. Then get what YOU like best.
Plenty builders make a bass as well, use components as good etc as Fodera.
But...do you like theirs as much as you like the Fodera?
If so, go for their instrument. If you prefer the Fodera , go for that. Simple :)

I'd look at (amongst others)

interesting.... i was looking about, would a pedulla rapture JJ be a good investment? I have never played a pedulla but i only hear rave things about them and the bass is about the same amount as the fodera i was looking at.

Get yourself a Nice German Warwick and call it a day. You'll find everything you referenced in a good Wick. Oh BTW

Warwick is a large scale manufacturer and I doubt very much that they will be able to attend to detail as much as a smaller builder has to in order to stay in business.
That's why I'd say warwick is no where near in a league the op seem to be after.

One of my students has a Rapture, it's a very nice bass. There are lots of NYC type instruments out there. +1 on shopping around. KSD (Ken Smith design), Sadowsky Metro, MTD Kingston/KZ series, Carvin SB series, etc. all meet the criteria of bolt on neck, 21-22 fret, premium active electronics, etc.
I will say that you are paying for great expertise in the builders and really superb wood when you buy a Fodera. I haven't played one I didn't love, even though I don't own one.
Roscoes are absolute sleepers as well-great basses!

I have a Rapture and consider it a superb instrument. It's a bolt-on model, and maybe not quite on the same level as a Fodera.

Raptures are expensive new, but you could buy 5 used Raptures for the price of 1 used Fodera.

If you really want an awesome sounding bass that sounds like no other, get a Brubaker Custom. He also makes his own version of a JB that is killer. There is no way you can go wrong with a Custom Brubaker.
