Fodera and the Groove Shoppe

Welcome to the family. You're in good hands with Joel and the Beez.

Fodera used Bartalini's and Haz Labs pre's in those days. My 93' Emperor had them than later I switched out for Duncan dual coils and Pope pre.

Enjoy the gig tonight, you have good reason too. :bassist: :hyper:

David has been great to deal with, even now after the fact I know they stand behind there product. Not that these are simply products, but you know what I mean :)

I have an Epi T2x10 that Im dying to play it through, but Ill probably use the clubs back line for tonight.

In addition to be great guys to deal with the shop is very nice and they have great stuff on display Groove Shop, Glockenlang Sadowsky,Lakland , Euphonic Audio, Epifani, etc....

I even got a chance to play on Beez's beautiful Fodera..
a true work of art...

and the deal is if you spend a thousand dollars at the shop they will take you to the White Castle on the corner for an all out feast :hyper:

Yeah....I'll chime in and say that Beez and Joel are TOPS! My Imperial (dream bass) is over the top...and they were the only guys I would've worked with. I've also picked up a few other items from them...as well as picked their brains for info, bass-related and otherwise. The greatest...

Thanks David... I cannot wait to get that Bass recorded!... its very exciting for us to be able to have access to such amazing instruments, I cannot thank you enough for letting me use it. Ivy is getting the track together, it wont be too long. And I have not put the Emperor down since I got it, I gigged it tonight and Im going to record with it tomorrow...

Echo or Joel

I'm considering the same wood combo for my new Roscoe project (it will be a Century Signature VI). I was wondering if any of you could elaborate on to what are the contributions of this wood combo to the sound of the bass. Of course yours is a odera and will sound like so while mine will be a Roscoe and will also sound like so. Nonetheless, the wlanut body, redwood top and ebony FB are sure to play a part in the overall feel and tonal cvharacter of the bass, how would you describe it?

Please discuss.

Well also keep in mind my setup is a P/J config. Im not sure what you are going for on Your Roscoes, Ive owned a few Roscoes in the past always had the three band Bart system and have loved the way that sounded I havent had a chance to play the newer one with the nordstrands etc....
But running my Fodera passive I usually favor the bridge pup more and get a very tight edgy tone theres alot of bass there but no mud just clean and tight with Growl. Im not sure how much the top woods really contribute to the tone on Foderas but the walnut body wings and Maple center block can work in alot if not all situations very universal ...great great sound

I would imagine that the ebony fingerboard lends itself to more snap and helps to give the tone more of that edge as well
Ill probably have my Fodera tracked pretty soon and should have some samples of how it mixes...

Hey Tom, how'd the gig go?

IMHO, your sounds initial tone comes from the nut and the bridge, to two points of contact from the string. The rest of the basses body make-up is secondary. You're right about the ebony board, it's fast and will add the snap too. By fast, I mean the notes are prominent and will make you a more precise player.

Hey, thanks for asking.
it went well, had a bit of a rough time with the stage mix the sound guy at this particular place is usually good ...anyway the Fodera sounded great very comfy to get around on. I should have this bass tracked soon.

Maybe its just the ones Ive had but Roscoes have seemed inherently warm sounding and they also sounded good in the studio, Never had one with an ebony board though. The Alembics Ive owned have had ebony boards and they have all had a very articulate precise sound to them, they were still warm and growly but they stood out and were sometimes very hard to Tame down when you wanted them to sit in a mix, I know.... probably has alot to do with the electronics as well.

As for the Fodera well like I said we havent really tracked it yet, but the wood combo seems to work in alot of situations... there is a Fodera magic ! . When we briefly tracked it just to sample what it would sound like, it worked wonderfully.

BTW: I usually leave it active and just boost the lows and highs a touch. it still retains that passive tone in active mode, Im really liking, the Haz Labs pre alot

Yeah, the ebony board will really change your tone and particularly pending what pre is being used. That's the difference with wood selection and the pre used. Fodera does have its own sound to them, both my Fodera's have their unique sound to them and the walnut/ebony has its own place in my playing, I mostly use my Emperor which is ash/maple. Here's a few photo's of my Garrison since you now have the same body make-up.
-walnut body w/full crotch walnut top
-ash neck w/ebony fb
-alder block
35" scale
-Duncan dual coil pu's w/ wood covers
-Pope pre w/Emperor layout
