Nuances is an understatement. I've done the experiment and can tell you it's a HUGE difference moving from 60's to 70's. It totally changes the character of the bass. Not so much when soloing the bridge PU, but when both pups are on. Particularly when you're slapping. It's really, really evident. Even going from 2 1/2 to 2 3/8 is noticeable, though much, much more subtle until you really know the sound of your bass. Less than that is not discernable to my ear. Maybe it is to some. This is why I chose to have detents 1/8" apart...I don't see a need for anything finer. Thing is with this stuff, the changes are pretty much the same for every 34" scale bass. All the harmonics are in the same places on every 34" scale bass (save discrepancies do to string height/intonation adjustment). So within the context of a single bass, you can fairly reasonably predict what the difference will be when you change from one position to another.
There is a distinct possibility that this will ultimately be available aftermarket. Almost certainly for Fodera Basses at least. I'd like to see it become a readily available option for any Fodera and any pickup. At the moment we've only done one for the P4 sized (4 string, 5 string or narrow 6 string) dual coil, but it can be done for J bass pups or whatever...even wood cases could be done. It'll come down to what's practical.
+1 for minor changes in pup position ..makes a huge difference (to my ear) and even more so while slapping.
Mike, I wanted to ask you to clarify a post you wrote in the last thread (post 796 in case you wanted to look but really dont have to). It has some relevance to my upcoming Fodera order.
In effect, if I'm reading right, were you explaining that placing dual coils in the typical 70s Jazz position (outer coils ) will not automatically put the bridge inner coil in the correct position for 60s placement? Did I misunderstand? If thats true, if you put the bridge dual (again outer coil in the 70s placement) in humbucking, then would the "pup placement" shift to 60s? (right in between both coils on the bridge dual).
Another question relating to that; do the three dual coil pup manufacturers for Fodera have the same distance between pole pieces going from the inner coil to the outer coil on any given string?
Thanks!
Mitch
