In short I would recommend the shop to anyone. As soon as I opened the case, (btw the new cases should be called "mobile luxury safes"!!) I knew it was the correct decision. Through the hours of playing and inspecting the instrument I have been discovering more reasons. Shoot me a pm or email, I have a lot to say on the matter.

Is there anyone's Fodera deluxe or emperor 5 string that is lighter than 9 lb?

Not sure about 5s, but my Monarch 4 is 8.5 lbs and my YYD is 8.7 lbs. My YYS was 8.3 lbs.

Yes, maple and purple heart neck. It weights 12.5-13lbs! I asked Jason that max weight be no more than 30lbs so I think they did a good job.

We use Indian and African Ebony interchangeably in the shop and choose the pieces of each that sound the best to us. Macassar we treat separately and do not use unless requested / spec'd.

Jason, is the Macassar a little softer sounding than the other ebony?

No, Mahogany wings with an alder tone block. Pau Ferro finger board. I wanted to the bass to sound a little less "focused" and replacing the alder wings with mahogany gave it the effect I wanted.

I have only played 3-4 Macassar Ebony FB instruments in the past several years (we don't build with it that often). I cannot say that I remember hearing a substantive difference tonally...but I wouldn't go to the bank with that

That's a schweet bass Dan! Very cool to know the folks who share the same material in their axes to.
I heard Donovan at Fretspot comment that he thought the red alder was a bit brighter than the regular alder when reviewing the YYS. Is that the only difference? I really like the way it sounds.
