No, they do not completely nail the SD single coil sound. If they did I would have never been on the fence and waivered back and forth. The reality is that in single coil mode, the dual coils are very, very close to true single coils...say 95%? But they are not identical.

Do the SD dual coils completely nail the SD single coil sound in single coil mode? Close? Not close?

I like the single coil tone on my E5S but the only reference points i have for real single coils are Fenders.

Yes and this is THE WORST PART OF THE WAIT!!!!!

Yes, I am most definitely human and one of the reasons that I love working with our customers is because I get to build a LOT more instruments that way -- without having to pay for them all myself. LOL!!

I find the entire human process of choosing specs, second guessing them and then finally living with the choices to be a very wonderful process. Full of possibility, flaws and intrigue. It simply never gets old whether I am working on my own bass or one of yours...

Oh man Jason! You are HUMAN, and it's nice to know you struggle with decisions just like the rest of us do . I do think that the sd duals sound the closest to a true single coil than any other hum canceling type of pickup, better than the split coil design, but I like that its not exactly the same, that's what gives it some character. Enjoy your new baby, only a couple more weeks huh?

The sad reality is that something changed over time with the Aeros and the ones that we were getting just no longer the same and that is why we stopped using them.

ime the aeros they used to use had a way better split to single tone than the duncans. the duncans sounded a little thinner. i greatly preferred the dual coil sound of the duncans though.

Jason, all I can say is.... You're awesome dude! you bring the human aspect to life every time a Fodera is mentioned.
I still can't believe I now finally own a Fodera! I also bought the Epifani piccolo head as both of them together just sound like heaven, also plugged it straight in virtually anything that amplifies sound and oh boy does it deliver the tones that I have dreamt of. By the way, thanks for the wonderful words on the description section of my Fodera on the site! Hehe, very thoughtful and humorous.

Toyed with it, but I sometimes dig the neck in dual coil mode as it allows me to approximate a P-Bass...again, not all the way there, but close enough!

Didn't feel like trying something different and go with a bridge DC and neck SC?

If it helps at all, it is an incredibly hard decision. I have been close to putting singles in the last 3 (including this one) and every time at the very last minute I remind myself how much I love my basses that do have dual coils in them and I end up just reverting back to them. Perhaps I am gutless or maybe I just like the flexibility.

I guess it comes down to choosing the lesser of two evils. I can see myself regretting not doing the dual coils, but I know I will never regret not doing the single coils. Again, this is a totally personal decision...

Anyway, it probably is good for you all to know that we suffer through these decisions too. You should have seen Vinny picking woods for his guitar. OMG!!!!!

- maple FB for rosewood FB for more flexibility sounding and more warm

- walnut crotch instead of olive top

But I keep the ash body.

If any one here had play ash/body with both maple and rosewood FB, please let me know your thoughts !

We have done that in the past and not really loved it. If you want P/J tone on a 5er and want a more vintage sound (as opposed to EMG's), this is THE way to go. It is the best that we have heard...

Big kudos to Andy for pushing us in this direction. He had been working with us for almost three years to refine that tone and through his work with Carey (Nordstrand) coupled with using the "Emperor Standard Platform" we finally got something that made us all say "wow."

A friend of mine had an Emperor 5 with ash body, redwood top, and Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. That was the best sounding Fodera I've ever heard, maybe one of the best sounding basses I've ever heard. I'm not an ash guy, I much prefer alder, but this bass made me rethink it a little. I think it was the fingerboard that brought the tone back to my liking as I'm used to playing ash/maple basses which I don't like.
