I'm gonna vote side-dots only as well.

1) Pink Ivory would look great without inlays;
2) Only having side dots improves technique/posture - by eliminating the tendency to occasionally look "over" the fretboard and only rely on the side;
3) If you really, really want inlays down the road, you can install them then.

IMO, YMMV.

#2 makes a lot of sense good insight, was thinking the same last night.

I still love my dots, ill take any and all help I can get... .

Keep in mind if you are giving lessons or showing someone a part the dots REALLY help. Just my .02.

Good point. If your sneaky guitarists use your fingerboard as a cheat sheet from time to time, it will screw them up. Weird tunings make it even worse for them.

Question for Jason,

On your fretless basses, are the side dots over the lines (on a lined fretless) or "in pitch" as it is referred to in other TB threads? Or, are they in standard fretted position (between the frets).

That's the best reason for side dots. I love it when they have to rely on what they consider to be an instrument beneath them to get them through a song they are trying to fake their way through. Let them learn their own music. LOL

I've only owned one solid body Imperial and one chambered Imperial, but the difference in weight and balance is dramatic and there is definitely a difference in tone. Not huge, but certainly noticeable to my ear. Chambered seems to have less punch with a slightly more 3-D quality one might expect from it. Hard to say which I like more, but there's definitely a "thing" to each. IMO, if weight is a concern to you, chambering is awesome.

I think weight is about a 1/4 to 1/2 pound depending on the details. I'm actually anxiously awaiting the return of my fretted 5 as I had Vinny do a bit of surgery on her. Should be back in my hands in time for tomorrow's gig with steubig

My chambered imperial isn't neck heavy, but it's a 33" scale.

Mine is a 33" scale as well but it's PERFECTLY balanced. I've played a chambered AJ Presentation 6 too and the shorter scale adds even a bit more balance, IME/O.

Same if they don't know how a 5-string is tuned. I've had guitarists cheating off me thinking the B string is the E string.

I don't know...my old Browne bass looked pretty ok with lines, dots, and binding...and it was ALL FLAMED MAPLE!!!

Congrats. My buddy was the touring bassist with the American Idol show a few years ago (the Top 10) and he had a blast. I met all of the Idols and they were all "deer in the headlights" kids, but to tour with one would likely be a great gig.... Hopefully it is still pre-rock star attitude!
