Victors and many others. Vic's wife's name is Holly but I have no idea if that motivated the wood choice.

When we do that on a Bolt-on or a Deluxe we call it a three-piece body and that is an available option. We are actually using that construction on the Emperor 5 Fretless Standard. We found that by using a center block of Swamp Ash we could attain the tone that we wanted for the instrument and reduce the weight by over 1/2 pound...

I don't think Holly really does anything sonically, it just looks really cool for an unpainted wood....

Personal preference. I really dig the clean look of it.

And yeah, as Mitch said (and Jason advised me as well) it doesn't really offer any tonal advantages/disadvantages.

Jason once said to me that Holly has a density like maple - so I would guess that Holly would have a more positive little impact on the final tone than a Buck-Eye or soft Spalted maple ....
