Guys, what does it mean "Extended B-string headstock"? What does it do for the sound? :eyebrow:

Guys, what does it mean "Extended B-string headstock"? What does it do for the sound? :eyebrow:
:eyebrow: :smug:
The extended B-string headstock features a longer *non-vibrational* portion of the B string beyond the nut. The B string tuning post is where the A string would normally be on a regular 6 string. They scoot the E and A tuners closer to the middle of the headstock to permit the B string to pass along the outer edge of the headstock.

What it does for the sound I can't say. It's a controversial feature some believe is pure hype (as has been stated at the Yahoo! Fodera boards and elsewhere) while others believe that it really improves the tonal aspects of the instrument. I don't care if the string wraps around and attaches to the back of the headstock. The bass sounds good. That's all I care about. Vinnie and Joey know what they're doing and I trust their experience. I got the bass used so it wasn't like I specifically requested the feature.

The biggest part of the controversy seems to stem from the fact that Fodera has augmented the non-vibrational, or non-speaking, length of the string which theoretically shouldn't alter the sound at all. It can't "tighten up" the string because the scale length is identical - only the portion between the nut and tuning post is increased. So that's why I just stay out of it and have fun playing the instrument instead of arguing about it ad nauseum. This has been argued about a lot already. :ninja: :D

im pretty sure the guys at Fodera would not waste their time and energy doing something that makes no difference.

Dave

It may make some sort of difference in tone, but not tension as has been stated in the past. The guys at Fodera are fantastic luthiers- top of the food chain. That doesn't mean that their knowledge of physics is equally as great ;) :D

Well maybe if WE got to have fun playing your instrument, we wouldn't be wasting out time arguing either :D :D

You should buy a 35" scale bass, a 34" without the string extension, and a 34" with the string extension and let us know the results! :D

well my fodera is 35" and i once played a 34" scale emporer liek mine but with the extendo B headstock, personally i couldnt hear much of a difference between the B strings, i guess that is the point though :)

ive heard people say in the past that it might have something to do with there being more mass on the headstock, i would like to pick Vinnie's brain regarding this though.

Anyone got $15K (and a decade) lying around? :D

Part of the problem is that some of their 35" basses have weak B's and some of their 33's are monsters - the wood and final instrument variations are such that doing a proper comparison would require you to amass a sizable "test group" from which to sample. Instead of one of each example you'd probably need at least two or three. It'd be amazing to one day record and archive every instrument they made - and do side-by-side comparisons. Think we can do it at Tom's place? :eyebrow:

Yeah, that probably is the point! :)

It certainly looks like the extended B headstock is slightly wider. Haven't actually measured it against a regular 6 to make sure though. I meant to ask them the last time I was there but I got sidetracked by all the pretty wood and forgot. :D
Lots of awesome new basses in the final stages ready to be shipped out.

I notice that my Sadowsky NYC's, with their thicker headstocks, are more resonant and balanced than my former Metro. Who knows how much of that is purely a function of the thicker headstock but it certainly seems to do something, if only for the resonance - apart from the chambered body. As I understand it the thicker headstock was implemented to combat dead spots but I think there are multiple positive effects. Maybe that's the dominant positive influence in the Fodera design - more headstock mass and not necessarily tuner placement and/or increased nut-to-post length?

Dang it, I said I was gonna stay out of it. Oh well. :p

Hey Garey, that was the #40 I sold to you!!!!!!! Gee, a famous bass player has my old bass, how cool is that!

Yup....when I had to thin things out around here, I offered it to Vic (who is a friend and employer) and he jumped on it. He played it the night he got it (at Bass At The Beach). I figured it was so close to his #37...worked out perfectly.

Now I'm down to my Monarch #84 and Imperial 6...not too bad!

Aloha, Garey
