One thing I don't like about metal is that most metal bass players follow for 80% of the time what the guitar is doing, which is pretty boring in my opinion. Sometimes unisono sounds cool, but I would say try to follow your own path, that makes it much more interesting. But it's not always easy when you have a very busy or really rhythmic guitar riff. Sometimes unisono is the only or best option.

Your song is a good example. To my ear, the bass part in the first riff is too messy. The two main reasons for that would be that the bass is not playing off the drums and it's not EQed to cut through the mix, so the ear tends to listen to the drum beat and guitar and the bass sits nestled in between the two, but it does stuff that does not fit that sound.

In the second part, where the bass is pumping 8ths, this works much better.
