Food, Fat, Obesity and Airplanes - a question

I think what a lot of it is is that Americans like to discriminate, and smokers and fat people are two of the few groups for which that is still allowed. Nothin' like pushing people around to make one feel important!

QFT

Do you think those who defend the rights of smoking tend to have insurance or cover their own bills?

You are displaying a profound lack of understanding as to how insurance actually works. Insurance companies are generally, reliably profitable. What does that tell you?

Respectfully, I think you guys are missing the point. With regards to flying (and flying only) where space and weight is a premium, charging more for big/heavy/tall people (note that i do not use the word fat) makes sense. It is as much penalising you for your genes as high shelves in supermarkets penalise short people. People are born different, deal with it.

In the same way "fat percentage" or "pinch tests" at an airport are ridiculous. Some people weigh a lot. Does it matter if it is 99% fat or 99% muscle? They are going to be taking up two seats in either case.

Bingo.

Do people complain that UPS charges more for heavier/larger packages?

Why should people be any different?

perhaps the airlines are using an unrealistic, small standard for the average passenger's size so they can cram more seats on an airplane.....

Sure.

...and sports stadiums do the same thing (hell, apparently Jerry Jones already has special narrow seats for the New Cowboys stadium in storage)...

So what?

You don't have some sort of right to cheap flights on private air carriers.

perhaps the airlines are using an unrealistic, small standard for the average passenger's size so they can cram more seats on an airplane.....the supermarket analogy is flawed.....if the short guy can't reach the product, they will get it down for him....get kicked off a plane and......

You could always start your own airline with huge seats and cheap pricing. Really.

Regarding that being a flawed analogy, how about traffic lights being discriminatory against the colour blind? Right handed scissors being discriminatory against lefties? Snicker bars that are discriminatory against those allergic to peanuts?

Everyone's different. There are worse consequences for being "different" than being kicked off a plane or being forced to buy two tickets, consequences some people unfortunately deal with day in, day out. Without complaint. Seriously.

The other thing is that bad food is CHEAP. It used to be that being fat was a sign of wealth and skinny people were poor people. Now the cheapest thing you can buy at the store is coke and chips while fresh produce is expensive. It's the affluent who buy healthy food and have health club memberships.

A 10lb bag of potatoes is 99cents. As is 2 stocks of celery, a bag of carrots, 2 heads of broccoli, and tortillas. All at the 99cent store. A block of cheese is $2.50. My girlfriend and I can eat veggie quesadillas 3 times in 1 week for under 10 bucks.

That's what my daughter does. She keeps everything in two Tupperware containers and makes it last for a week. She adds chicken which doesn't cost much either. I'm big into leftovers from cooking on the grill over the weekend. I can make some great secondary meals during the week. Beyond that, I usually eat out because I'm lazy

Man, I'd get a job before I had to do that!

IMO, filling up on potatoes is like one of the worst things you can do to yourself, especially if you are sugar intolerant. And that's no way to live. At least, I think eating should be more than refueling. But I also believe in living to live, not living to not-die.

Im not saying we do eat the same thing three times a week, just that its relatively cheap to eat healthy. We're both vegetarians, and we actually enjoy potatos (along with lots of other veggies). Vegetables can be cooked many different ways and flavored differently with spices. We also eat a lot of rice and whole grain pasta, also very cheap. We're both really good cooks and actually enjoy the food we eat.

I don't think the idea is to fill up on potatoes. A good balance of all the ingredients is what's best. Compared to what many eat, I'm sure it's very healthy. My daughter chooses to make and eat them because she's enjoys them, not to save money. Trust me on that part :atoz:

Yeah, how did they cope in the years between 1780 and 1920.

I'm a large rich black woman. I solve this problem like I do so many of my other problems. I eat them. If a person next to me is complaining. Consider him eaten. If an airline makes me buy two seats. I eat it. Airplanes, checkers, baggage handlers, security, and all the little stewardesses for dessert. You can't tell me what to do. I'm American damnit. I eat.

I'm just saying that while potatoes, rice and pasta might be cheap, a diet full of them is really not very good for you, all in all. It is fattening and full of carbs and that can lead to T2 diabetes, among other things.

How did people cope? By dying young, for one thing. By bootstrapping the industrial age so they didn't have to live like that, for another.

Cheap, healthy, good-tasting. Pick two.

Only if you eat too much and exercise too little.

Carbs are no more fattening than fat are no more fattening than protein.

Too many calories in and not enough calories out is the problem, not the source of the calories.

Plus - if you're talking whole wheat pasta and brown rice, they don't even have the sugar issues associated with white flours.

Carbs don't cause T2 - being overweight causes T2.

Not really true...

They survived by eating significantly smaller portions, and getting way more exercise. They ate less meat, they ate a lot less processed sugar... and they worked manual labor jobs.

Cheap, healthy, good-tasting. Pick two.

Nah...

Venison - Cheap, healthy, good-tasting.

Red Beans & Rice - Cheap, healthy, good-tasting.

Homemade Hummus - Cheap, healthy, good-tasting.

Homemade Soups & Stocks - Cheap, healthy, good-tasting.

There are lots of tasty, healthy, and cheap food out there. You're just going to have to cook. You aren't buying packaged food that meets those criteria.

A diet full of potatoes is far better than a diet full of take-away.

I find that portion sizes are far too large on a whole, even here in Australia. I can rarely eat a whole burger, and a Pizza designed for one person will last me a whole 24 hours, 3 meals from 1 pizza :D

Im really digging this idea of cheap airfares for skinny people though...
