Fooly Cooly

Too over the top for me. That's why I could never dig most anime.
Most anime actually isn't in this hyper references-filled ultra action fanservice type of genre. There's everything from the super technical action thrillers (like Ghost in the Shell), to your standard "slice of life" type dramas (like Honey & Clover), to children's favorites (like Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso, Spirited Away... can you tell that I am a Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibili fan?). Gainax is most definitely known for the over-the-top stuff (many of their works have become cult classics in the Anime community).

heh. yeah, there's a reason anime or movies that end all Lynchian and odd and make you wonder if there was a point or if there were a BILLION points is called Gainaxing.

but yeah, stuff like Ghost In The Shell, Perfect Blue... adult themed stories that are told and experienced in a very different way because they're animated not live action.

anime and manga are very viable story telling formats, with a wide range of output.

There have been a couple ones I thoroughly enjoyed. Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away were some of my childhood favorites, for example. My friend tried to get me to watch Full Metal Alchemist (and I did) but the anime style itself is very hyperactive.

EDIT: Behndy, thanks to that clip, I think I've finally figured out your avatar.

yep on the FLCL ava.

also, YAY FOR ANIME NERDS UNITING!!!

.... urr. i'm still cool tho. ignore the bookselves full of manga, anime and graphic novels, the Personal Weighted Companion Cube dice in the mirror of my car, the dozens of webcomic t-shirts and the japa-fetchi fulfilling Japanese wife.

I'M STILL COOL.

(not true)

I don't necessarily consider myself an anime nerd, but if the story is interesting and it doesn't have to to with power levels at 9000 or that crap I usually will watch it. Pretty much everything Hayao Miyazaki has done, Ghost in the Shell, Blood The Last Vampire, Dead Leaves, Cowboy Bebop, and shows such as Hellsing OVA, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood and the first one), Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, and a couple of others I can't recall are all great stories with killer animation.

There already is one... well it's more about the music in anime, but it's there all the same. :D

Also... I've been tempted to get either the Companion Cube dice, or a plush Companion Cube for quite a while now... Portal is frigging amazing, and Portal 2 totally didn't disappoint! Now I'm waiting for the extra content that was promised for Portal 2, and (hopefully) Portal 3 to be released. :D

You must really like Cowboy Bebop (I don't blame you, it's friggin awesome!) because you listed it twice!

Also... The Pillows (FLCL among others) and The Seatbelts / Kanno Yoko (Cowboy Bebop among others) are awesome!

The movie in the one list. :)

But its that good anyways. The story and the music are well worth it alone, but the attention to detail in the animation was top notch as well. One of my favorite mangas was GunsmithCats due to the extreme level of detail the author put into the drawings of the guns, vehicles, etc. The show was a little disappointing after the seriousness of the manga though.
