True on all counts. In the OP's case, it sounds like he can't post specifics because he hasn't bought anything yet. :)

OP, the best thing you can do is get a power amp with an "input sensitivity" rating of 0.7 volts. Not 1.0 V, not 1.2 or 1.4 V, seriously. What this number means is the amount of output signal level (from a preamp) that will drive the power amp to full strength; the lower the number, the better your odds that a pedal preamp will do the job properly.
