For those of you with more than two bass guitars, why?

Well for those with thirty high end bass guitars it seems redundant and expensive at a point. I guess i understand wanting to have variety but having similar basses seems excessive. But you know, people are free to spend their money how they want and its a free county.

To those with numerous low end basses, i would much rather high have one high end bass like a made in america fender, music man, thunderbird or RIC.

In some ways, I envy someone like James Jamerson, who essentially played one bass for most of his career. On the other hand, there's a lot to be said for the John Entwistle approach.

I can see some people with two different types of basses and their respective backups.

I have three Pbasses and two jazz basses. I think it's a little excessive but my rational is:

#1 bass. It's a PBass with a P retro preamp. It is what gets played live and on the rare occasion that we record stuff.

#2 bass. It's a P bass that I leave at my singer's house so I don't have to bring mine to rehearsal as I'm usually coming straight from, or going straight to, work or school. It plays very well but is heavier than my other basses.

#3 bass. It's a vintage P bass I got from my girlfriend. It's fun to play and it's got flats on it. I mostly use this for playing at home and recording.

#4 is my jazz bass. It's got Delano pickups and an aguilar preamp. I use this for when I need a jazz bass, or when I play outside.

#5 is my beater jazz. I use it to busk and it's a giant hunk of crap. I keep it so I don't have to worry about things I care getting stolen or damaged.

For decades I only had one, which I did not play very often.

Then, about 10 years ago, I started playing seriously again, and quite often... My searches concerning playing, brought me to this place called Talkbass...

Now, I have five.
Yeah a lot of people here seem to have more than two. I played a 4 string sterling for a long time. I think i was real particular about playing my bass and also i think it is very versatile for a bass guitar. I only recently bought a RIC 4003 and I love it so much i dont think i will play anything else. I will keep the sterling as a backup.
