Already have a 4 string J and I'd probably get another one just because of the neck (I've been spoiled by the narrow nut width), or get a P and put a J neck on it.

For those who have never owned a fender ?

Hmmm, possible the Duff McKagan sig - it does ooze 80s rock \m/.
Although, I've never got on with the fender body sizes, always feels a bit bulky, so possible a P bass lyte which is a little slimmer and trimmed down, much like my Attitude is a trimmed down P.

I've never owned a Fender. If I got one, it would be a Natural P bass with maple fretboard, black pg. Jazzes are way too big for me.
I would probably then plane and carve the body down, and also route out all the extra wood under the pick guard, and swop out the neck for a Status one with ultralight tuners.

Good call. I have '51 Precision G.A.S. myself, and making it unique with a cool finish would be icing on the cake.
The MIJ 51's are nice basses. I just "rediscovered" mine. With flats great for the new blues band project
I have an unusual, unexplained love for P-basses (even though I don't own one, not a Fender anyway)
But if I had to choose I think I'd get a J-bass. Black with black pickguard and maple fretboard.

I've never owned a Fender but I really enjoyed wasting time checking out different American P-Basses at several local music stores last week.
I tried out some Jazzes and Jags, too but those necks are too tapered for me. The neck on the P is very comfortable. "Precision" is one spot on name for this instrument, huh?

I think there are better choices than P or J from Fender, so i guess if i'd want to get a P or J, i'd choose another company. They're just too expensive IMHO for "simple" P's and J's.
But (old) Telecaster basses and the Stu Hamm signature-bass are really sweet/interesting

I like Mustangs. I could dig that.
P's are sick too... but the neck doesn't jive with me, which is a shame...

The other one would be an American Standard or American Special Jazz. Actually, the one American Special I played one time was the best Jazz I've ever played.

I haven't had a Fender for years, though I had a Lakland JO5 with Fralins in the last few years and that was nice. I'm not a big fan of 35" scale basses though, so it went. I once had a P bass in the early 80's and I absolutely hated it.

I'd take the $1200 or so for a new Deluxe AM whatever and get a Bongo myself.

Never owned a fender.
White p bass with that deep red/brown tortoiseshell pick guard and a dark neck. Looks tight as hell.
Or white p bass with black tuners, strings, knobs, pickguard and black fret markers with the light maple neck. Not sure if this is something easy to get or would have to customize myself.
Maybe next year.
