Forgotten 70's Rock Bands

[Gunga Din]

Horslips--best band out of Ireland not named U2.
Pearl Harbor and the Explosions--put out one great album in 1980. Their bass player was amazing.
Jules and the Polar Bears--two great albums in '78 and '79. Terrific guitar rock with arch lyrics (a la Steely Dan). Now basically forgotten.

With you on Horslips. Loved Dearg Doom.

The Strawbs....ethereal folk/prog/rock with a highly eccentric lead singer. A bit of an acquired taste but I loved 'em. They got a little too obsessed with commercial success in the mid-70s and their stuff got kind of plasticky and trivial, but the early-70s albums ("From the Witchwood" through "Bursting at the Seams") are inventive and beautiful. Their bass player in this period, John Ford, had a uniquely fat, percussive style--almost like a pitched tabla at times.

I know they’ve been mentioned before in this thread, but I’ll bring up Badfinger again. 1971’s “Straight Up” (from the year I was born) is a fantastic album, start to finish.

Not sure if they've been mentioned but I was seriously into Canadian band Max Webster, which was seriously difficult in the UK as no one had heard of them and their records were very hard to find, but steely determination led me to getting all their albums eventually. Great band.

Yep. Epic band from the 70s. Pinnacle was Battlescar with RUSH. Then Kim Mitchell went solo and full on commercial with pap like Patio Lanterns. He still draws crowds around here (well, before Covid anyways).

Not sure if Frank Marino/Mahogany Rush has been mentioned, but he had quite an arena rock touring g career in the 70s.
