Forums upset me!

Dear OP -

Yeah, I think you are probably right. No one likes getting "fONged" or "pwn3d" or "FAIL" or "/thread."

That being said, when one has "passion" for something, (music, movies, etc.) that passion consumes the person. We are all victims of some kind of passion, and we are helpless.

It's just too bad that our passion for music ends up wasted on some tiny internet forum, insisting that the Fender P Bass is the ONLY bass tone alive, or that it is impossible to become a better player than Victor Wooten, or Jaco P.

It's like falling in love; That special feeling you get when you are positive you've found something special can blind you - and at that point, well... you get the idea...

Please, feel differently than me.

I think they are really good points.

Also, as with what happened with Steve above, sometimes things can come across in text, that people don't mean. Sometimes, without body language or other forms of communication, it's easy to mis-undestand...

...but at the same time, i'm sure people flame for the hell of it, lol.

To be honest, I made that blog thread as an archive on my opinion on the matter, rather than having to constantly mail back my online students that have had their confidence broken by sarcastic or spiteful comments. All I need to do now, is point them in that direction when it happens.

I just want beginner bass players to know that they should do what they want, as long as they keep time and maintain the low. It doesn't matter what others think. Forums can be hard places for people just starting out...

You should see the motorcycle forums! There's about 10 extremely passionate & incompatible opinions on even the most mundane things. On certain seemingly objective technical matters, you'd think you could get a consensus... and you'd be wrong. :rollno:

Over there I've learned to screen the info very carefully and verify everything as thoroughly as possible. Certain folks will get entrenched and very stubbornly defend incorrect advice that might get you killed.

Here on a music forum, one's physical safety usually isn't at stake and most of this stuff is supposed to be subjective. So I can relax a bit more, here.

Another thing I have learned is that even if you have a 100% scientifically verifiable fact, it's best not to present it in a dogmatic manner that might cause another poster to lose face. That's a good way to make the other guy dig in and start a flame war (or as I call it: quote wrestling :D). It might be morbidly entertaining to watch from the sidelines. But I don't have the stomach for it myself, and the original point usually gets completely lost.

Ah, sorry man!

I was down your way judging to see if I can do some solo bass nights in some cafes etc, and maybe some solo busking!

Not the same laws as Canterbury, though. Done some great gigs down in Brighton, especially the concorde 2.

Do you play much?

Not as much now as I have done in the last 20 - 30 years...:crying:

I don't like Concorde 2 as a venue - the sound is terrible and the audience space is the wrong shape - long and thin...:hmm:

Favourite venues I have played in Brighton for sound and ambience - Komedia - nice and cosy. Corn Exchange - big and spacious with great sound system. Medium venue - Old Market Arts Centre - very good sound and well-maintained.

I played all these in a large (13-piece) Latin Jazz band - nowadays, I tend to avoid Brighton and play around Sussex with smaller and quieter Jazz bands - I shall be playing at the Chichester Jazz Festival..:)

I understand your view, and it's a very legitimate point to bring up. Unfortunately, those who should learn from your blog entry will probably never read it.

Side note: Anyone remember that guy who said something in the lines of "Theory is like a house, once you've built it you're stuck inside".

That's still one of my references as far as bad comparisons go. To this day I always wondered if he lives in a house without a door.

Yeah. Shut up Maki. No one asked you. :)

Now listen here OP,
There is this thread that a fine man named maki wrote. It is for the summer posters, but I do think it applies to you as well. I suggest that you go find it and read it through a few times. Then, realize that no one read blogs, and no one really cares about your crying. We know all about this stuff that you bring up, but frankly, we don't care.

Either that, or I am an OT poster.

How many clicked on the blog? I figure the OP was just trying to generate traffic to his blog to make some money to buy the new Jonas Brothers CD. It drops on Tuesday I think. If you put $5 down now on the CD, you get a free Jonas Brothers fanny pack or bandana.
