FOUND A CAB SELL OR KEEP

ok. i was driving down the street and i saw a familiar shape...big box with 15" holes in it...so i said to myself..ok i turn around a check it out...so when i get there i find 2 15" drivers on top. they are out of thw cab and look to be in pretty goog shape..except the round nubs in the centers are dented...( i might be able to pop em back tho). then i realize it has 2 other things. i look and realize it has a tweeter then also realize that the cab is 3-way ( i think) so i took it all home. the cab itself is missing the back jack but not in too bad shape.I think its not a bass cab but part of a dj rig or pa system.im not sure if it works( the speakers or electronics). im debating whether to keep it or ebay it. i realize i might need new speakers(because of the condition or too handle more power...ratings below)

Also i have another problem. i think these are the drivers that came with it but alas the back of the caB READS 150W, 300W max 8ohm but yet both of the drivers are 4 ohms

so how does it equall 8ohms total?

anyone know anything about this it is manufactured by Welton and the product line is Pro Studio

SHOULD I SELL OR KEEP

if i keep...how much $$ will it cost to fix/upgrade

or sell the things and use the $$ towards my new rig im getting

ALSO, HOW MUCH $$$ U THINK ITS WORTH

PLEASE GIVE ME AN APPRAISAL

this is an ebay auction that i think is the same product

This is your fourth or fifth post on this lovely cab. Your options:

Disposal is always an option. In my locale, it costs $30 to dispose of a large appliance, so the cab would be worth minus $30.

Finding an unattended dumpster to throw it in is always a possibility, but you risk getting caught by the police and fined.

Installing two 15" randomly chosen drivers at $80 apiece before disposing of it would make the thing worth minus $190.

If you love the cab, put in the old drivers and store it in your room. Then you are only renting space for it at anywhere from $0.50 to $1.00 per square foot per month depending on your locale.

Remember the old saying: Not all road kill is good eating.

4+4 = 8 for impedance as well.

it's all about options. Does the flow have an option of EITHER of the 4's? (then its 2 ohm.)

does the flow have NO option... having to travel through BOTH 4's? the the answer is 8.

I found 2 cabs last year. one was a car sub and the other was a very old PA cab. After some tinkering with conversions, I just parted them out on craigslist ( and maybe ebay) and used the couple dollars to buy an awesome set of plans for a PROJECT cab (like yours) that will actually be well worth the time and cost (minimal).

Incidentally, I seem to find a peice of gear in the trash about every eyar for a while now. usually crap. Sometimes mint. Go figure.

Try the cabinet and see if you like it. It sounds if both of the speakers are 4 ohm that it is wired in series. This will add 4+4 to give 8 ohms, instead of the division that is usually required for speakers wired in parallel. If you have a volt/ohm meter I would use the ohms scale and make sure both speakers are reading around 4 ohms while disconnected from the wires. The readings will be less than 4 ohms because the meter is inducing a DC voltage instead of an AC voltage onto the voice coil. This is normal. If both speakers check fine wire them for 8 ohms. Do this by taking one of the speaker jack leads and going to the + on the first speaker. Take the - of the first speaker and feed it to the + of the second speaker. Take the - of the second speaker and feed it back to the speaker jack lead. Your speakers are now wired in series. Let us know what you think.

not in the world of impedance where the addition system was invented by snobbish leprechauns!

Sorry - speakers in series always add . . . . . no voodoo there at all . . . . he was asking how two fours could give 8 - that's a gimme . . . .

Oh, and actually, I have yet to see a true discussion of impedance here - only the resistive component. Speakers are far from a pure resistance, and if you think just resistance is hard, go have a go at figuring it out with both the resistive and reactive components of an impendance in play . . . . . .

Would you take minus $189.99? Link Removed

bassking: None of us can actually guess a resale value on a cabinet that may or may not work, and which we haven't seen the cosmetic condition of. Shipping costs could easily be a deal breaker as well.

well it appears to be in good shape to me.( i might posat pics if i can get mycamera working) it is carpeted and ported on the bottom. the only problem is im not sure if the speakers/horn/crossover works...besides the electronics(which im unsure of) the cabinet itself is in great shape...so do u think it would be worth anything just for even the cab (local pickup, maybe?)

Do you have a local craigs list? You could always aim high, like 25 bucks, and see if anybody takes it.

Here's the problem. When designing a speaker, one of the things you control is the internal volume of the cabinet. Changing the volume helps you tune the speaker to the frequency response curve that you want. If you start with the cabinet volume, and try to find a driver for it, then it is much more of a crap shoot whether you will ever make anything that sounds good.

For that reason, starting with an existing box is actually a liability when putting together a homemade speaker. As for the electronics, I assume it is optimistically capable of handling the 300 W rating of the system, but I also envision that most people who want to haul around two 15's are going to want to throw in a lot more power. Thus the crossover and other parts are probably not worth anything in their own right.
