Found an Earthwood!

Seems that in most threads regarding ABG's some one mentions the Ernie Ball Earthwood, and how rare they are to find. Well, this morning, I came across this on craigslist.

Brian Ritchie is the player for Violent femmes, and he does play electric on occasion. As for electrics, IIRC, he owns an early Stingray ('77, wasn't it?), a Fender P and a Wishbass.

But yeah, someone drop an email to Ritchie...

Looks like mine, only I didn't pay $2250. Half that, and you've got a great deal on an incredible bass.
An Earthwood popped up on CL LA last week, but the ad said it had been defretted.

I've seen like maybe one picture of an Earthwood, it was friggen huge from what I remember, now I can't find it. Anyone care to post some?

I used to have an EBE ABG.

I bought it brand new, and it was fretless from the factory. It has a cool story behind it, but the short version is, it was a unique and rare ABG, but not as good as the Martin B65 ABG I traded it for and still have today (which is now only available from Martin on custom order). IMHO, these are great as rare collectibles, but the huge body is the reason I got out of mine.

I've been loving my Martin B-65 since I bought it new in 1992. It's so much fun to play. I've done tons of gigs with it over the years, all plugged in except for unplugged theatre gig, "Working". Tonight I used the Martin with my swing band on a holiday party where the setting was too tight spacewise for upright and the band loved it. They wanted to know why I hadn't used it before. I didn't think it fit aesthetically with a swing band. I heavily palm mute the strings, pluck with my thumb and can get a really strong fundamental out of the note which works well with jazz and bossa. The only drawback I find is that the intonation above 12th fret is out. It would be nice to find an ABG with good intonation on the entire neck. I'm also concerned that I'm going to wear a hole through the top soon (see pic).

Brian, that's so cool that your'e on TB. I've admired your playing for years. I had the distinct pleasure of working with Warren Bruleigh back in early 90s on some records and I used the Martin for pre-production rehearsals. Looking forward to more of your posts.

Thanks, I like it here. I've learned a lot and I always search Talkbass when I'm thinking about gear. Reviews from real working musicians carry a lot of weight, because they are relatively unbiased. The other thing that's great about Talkbass and our instrument is that, in my opinion, bassists support each other more than other instrumentalists do. I don't know if that's an illusion because of where I stand, but bassists seem to celebrate our diversity and compete less than some other people.

No, it's not just you, I perceive the exact same thing down here much lower on the food chain. I've had guys contact me because a particular gig wasn't right for them, but they thought of me and turned me on to it, etc. Bass players are a cool fraternity.
