Found my Personal Nirvana

Up until yesterday I've never been happy with my bass tone. I've been really close when I was younger, touring and recording, but never quite there.

Since I've started playing again I've been thru 6 basses and a handful of pedals and I've not gotten even close to finding something that when I first plug it in gives me a tone so satisfying, I never want to hear any other bass tone, Until last night.

I removed the H9 max FX and the Darkglass infinity off my board, leaving the HPF, Alma, CAPO and an Element with cab sim only on (no NR, Pro, or EQ)

Then plugged in my Wal-Ray mod and it was sonic bliss. The WalRay is the best sounding bass I've ever owned (the neck on my Rev is bettter, but the Rev PUs are less clear).

The Wal-Ray thru the Amla and CAPO instantly gave me a face punch and subtly rearranged all the cells in my body with it's amazing thick low End.

I do owe a thread to the steps of the mod, and it will come with some sound samples but until then...

Somehow I've been looking for something like your WalRay for a long time but didn't know what or where to look. In the last week I've found out about lusihand, herrick, and the like and am now excitedly spec-ing my next project. Nice Bass! Glad you're happy! I'm kinda copying you in the near future, except different.

The pickups are Chris Turner multicoils.

I’m probably going to do another mod with the same guys and a 19mm string spacing.

I’m not sure how close this bass is to a WAL sound but it sure does not sound like a stingray anymore.

That is dope. The really cool thing about people trying to build these Wal-clone basses (or at least, Wal tone clones) is that, even if they don't get it 100% accurate to the Wal sound, they inadvertently create tone-monsters in the process.

Not sure I need a sound past whatever my own hands contribute. I think part of the charm of playing live is a little different flavor every time, both in tone and note selection.

That said, I can dig that you like your signature sound.

That said, I can dig that you like your signature sound.

To each his own. I would be incredibly frustrated if i had to live with a different sound (and it not being the one I want) every time I gigged. Sure all venues are different and “good tone” is subjective, but I’d lose my mind if my Stingray didn’t sound Stingray-ey enough on a gig if I brought it to in fact stand out as the Stingray tone…

Glad you found Kismet with your gear. With a lot of players it’s lifetime of very passionate, endless, and very expensive search. Congrats!

I think Nirvana is close to Aberdeen/Hoquiam, Washington state. Bring an umbrella.
