Fractal Audio Club

And Fractal kind of hit the sweet spot in terms of connectivity-- for this price point. With the stereo Send/Return insert, and MIDI i/o, it's hard to complain. You could put your can't live without FX in the insert when you want. Does it let you manipulate the insert point in the path? Are there any parallel path options or is it all series?

Here's a link to the AM4 owner's manual: AM4 Owner's Manual

Insert loop is fixed at the output, post digital processing. IIRC, this was done to avoid another AD/DA conversion, keeping the insert loop in the analog domain.

Yes, you can have a parallel path, though somewhat limited due to the fact there's only 4 effects available.

Why are bassists so keen to get solid state models in there like GK? I feel like I’d just buy one of those amps if I wanted them.
I think the argument for GK and other solid state bass amp circuits has much to do with the preamp's tone/distortion circuits, if we assume that the power amp sections of these amps are designed to be functionally linear (only an assumption). This is why Line 6 and Billy Sheehan got together to model the Pearce BC1 preamp. I'd personally welcome preamp models of SWR, Trace Elliot, GK, Sunn, Acoustic, and other very well-known solid state bass amp heads. The fact that there are plenty of modeling devices that include GK (and other solid state) bass amp models would seem to be evidence that they're worthy of modeling. I know for a fact that there are bassists who won't consider Fractal for bass due to the handful of prominent bass amps that are not included, regardless of tube or S.S. design.
I hear the next gen of fractal products will support NAM, so if that pans out I feel like that should cover the solid state needs really well, as they should be pretty easy to profile.
Yes, absolutely, and this would all but remove the tension between bassists and Fractal product developers with respect to what bass-specific items they should include as being worthy of "stock" status. You can look here to see the types of NAM bass signal chains are being shared.
Bass NAM captures

So, I'm perfectly fine with Fractal Audio putting bass gear modeling on the back burner provided they're including a high quality NAM playback option. I just hope that NAM is included broadly across the next gen product line, and not limited to the next AxeFx rackmount version.

I’ve spent some time on the fractal forum so I think I know why it hasn’t been done. I believe the reason is because fractal only is interested in modeling tube amplifiers. The jazz chorus 120 is the only solid state model in the fractal universe. Guitarists have also been asking for solid state amps and it’s never happened for them either, so I don’t see it in the future for bassists either.

I think there is the potential for more bass amps if they have tube power sections, like a Mesa strategy 88. But especially with NAM on the roadmap for next gen, I don’t think we’ll see any solid state amp models additions in the near future.

Agreed. When NAM drops in Fractal land, the game is on for creating and finding all of those core bass tones that are not covered in Fractal products. And that's OK by me. Fractal has done themselves very well following their own course regardless of courting the bass community. Taking the long view, everything is just fine.

Bassists asking for GK/Trace Elliot/etc have been drowned out by guitarists asking for the solid state amps Dime used 😂

Switching from Axe III back to Quad Cortex after trying out the 3.3 update - the synth update and other new effects are blowing the Fractal options out of the water. I'll miss LFOs, envelopes, and the customizability of the foot controller but my rig is going to sound better and be about 50lbs lighter.

That’s why I got a VP4 myself, moved from an axe fx 3 with crown class a/b power amp to a Mesa class D head with VP4. Shaved 45lbs off my gig rig. Still have my 3 but it lives in my office

I have tried the Neural QC for a week. But I preferred the sound and workflow of my Axe fx II. That said I also bought the Neural Plini X and Tim Henson Archetypes plugins and I really like those. Just recorded a song where I use the Tim Henson one on all guitars and basses. Works for bass too. If there's any interest I can post a video of that track. Have to finish it this weekend.

You gotta be doing something really special to need to have an AxeFxIII for live gigs as a bassist. That's like owning a Ferrari to drive two blocks to the grocery store. I gigged the AXEFXII for a while in a TOOL tribute band, but short of something like that....I'm good with the FM9.

Indeed. I send out 5 separate channels to the house - stereo bass, stereo synth layer, and a sub bass layer. Usually at least 4 lanes per patch.

Last night I updated to FW12 from FW9, so finally got to try the SansAmp and Nobel DI drive types. Man, they sound great. Could've used these 15 years ago, and glad for the inclusion. SansAmp is spot on, and will be the basis for my live tone moving forward. I can use just this one block to replace amp and cab sims....very simple and effective...and satisfying.

So no cab needed with the SansAmp drive block?

Are you talking about an FM3? If so, any reason why you went only to 12 and not 13? Too new?
