I broke out a old Jay Hoggard album last night...I just love the tone Francisco gets!!! Him and drummer Buddy Williams where a killin' rhythm section. Buddy Williams also paired up great with Marcus Miller.....very grooving drummer!!!

Did I ever mention that I grew up 2 doors away from Jay Hoggard and never knew he was a musician until I saw his records in the stores!jerry said:

I guess Francisco was responsible for Jay Hoggard getting a record deal.....he dragged Dave Grusin to a solo recital of Jay's, and they signed him. DW, do you know what Jay Hoggard is up today?
Side note* I guess the early GRP stuff would be considered "smooth jazz".......but it's so much hipper than todays programed smooth jazz. Live rhythm sections make such a big difference in the groove and feel of the music! That's my story, and I'm sticking to it
Jay is a staff member at Wesleyan University. [email protected]. I did e-mail him once there a few years ago and he remembered me and my family. I hadn't seen him since he left town [Mount Vernon, NY] aprox. mid to late 70's!

Back in the Eighties they were starting to use a lot a synth bass so I had to fight back. On the record I used three Boss pedals to get that sound.
OC2 Octaver, Twah, and the VB2 vibrato pedaL.(I think in that order)
I also used a heavy pick for the attack and articulation and muted the bass with my right palm throughout except for the long notes.
That's it!

I recently picked up a cd of the bass mix of Francisco playing Hairspray.
What a smokin' player. It is really a lesson to hear him really up front in the mix and the way he interprets the book, he is an awesome musician. Great tone, great ideas, VERY flowing and effortless playing. He and the drummer and ON with the click track !
It is a humbling thing to have to play his part in Vegas. I can't say enough about his level of bass playing except I am glad I am not subbing for him in NYC.
Just picked up the entire bass book of the show so
I better get to work on it.... see ya guys!

yeah, it's going to be fun figuring out where to stick to the book and where to go "Francisco" on them! Lon Hoyt, md for the NYC show kept telling me to NOT play the ink, but there's a lot fo stuff that has to be hit. It's a fun show. Francisco is getting great tone from that Hartke bass , if that's what he's playing. I'm surprised how good a Hartke sounds. But i know it's him. You can tell the guy is a veteran, like you. I'm just trying to hang, bro!
the difference between the NY and Vegas level of musicianship is ridiculous.. we're freaking out because we only get 5 days to rehearse the whole show.. i heard they cut the record 3 days after they first ever saw that music. Gotta give up the props, man... respect!

He has mad chops but he's not a chops monster.
He really does serve the music and adds just the right colors.
I just happened to find a You Tube video he did a couple years ago where he explains his funk style, which is a cross between pick and slap.
