AFAIK he never needed permission to play the music.
The fights were about:
• Trademarks. E.g. Ahmet objected to Dweezil using the phrase "Zappa Plays Zappa" for his tour, so Dweezil renamed it the "Dweezil Zappa Plays Whatever The F@!# He Wants" tour.
• Merch. Frank-themed merch has to be licensed by the family trust, Dweezil claimed he wasn't being paid or something, and during the dispute stopped selling Frank swag at shows. Ahmet was apparently mad about Dweezil not selling Frank swag.
It doesn't help that the trust is allegedly in debt, and that almost everyone has badmouthed everyone else in public for years. The family struck a deal a few years ago which ended at least the public part of the feud.
As to UMG, the family has worked with them for years on reissues and streaming. UMG likely made them an offer that only a Dancin' Fool would pass up.

A mountain is something you don’t want to dance with! Picture an animated K Pop band landing in their space ship and an evil robot with a cowboy hat wants to outlaw music because it makes his actuators squeak. Oh, they could mess it up if they tried.
It’s always the right move. Some of the lyric references land but the film references are tough. You know when someone gets it the rest of the conversation is off the rails in a good way.
This is my thought, too. If ownership of copyright was a problem in this way, there would be no cover bands playing music anywhere. I don't think you need permission to perform a song live, and the issues with Dweezil's band had more to do with the family drawing a line around who could use the Zappa name.

as i recall, ahmet asked dweezil to pay a nominal $1. fee to help protect the "Zappa" trademark, i.e., the last part of "Zappa Plays Zappa" legally inferring 'dweezil zappa plays frank zappa', since once the trademark is compromised, it becomes legally indefensible. this request by ahmet pissed dweezil off no end ... and he went public with it on tour and retaliated by refusing to assist the z.f.t. with merchandise sales.

FZ pulled performance licenses for his music some time in the late 70's(?). That made public performance without permission illegal under copyright law.
I think someone (Gail?) made the decision to reverse that and to license most, or all, of his music with ASCAP after he died. That means it's fair game to play in public now.

Read the article? By that time, they had severed most ties, but UMG was still "a rent-paying tenant on NBC Universal’s lot". That is, the music archive was inside the Studio area; which is precisely why the fire determined the loss of all that music.
(But no, I don't think they still keep their masters/servers there either.)
