"Frankensteining" Help

I recently bought a new bass, and after hearing about how my guitarist's teacher wired three Burstbuckers together (into one 6-coil pickup, I guess - is that right?), I decided I'd like to do something like that on my other bass. I've decided on my pickups, configuration, etc, but as this is my first time tinkering with any of my instruments, I thought I should ask the experts (that's you guys!) before rushing into anything. I'd like my final setup to look something like this schematic, with the two Ric pickups wired together, and I was wondering how I would go about this. Thanks!

Thanks for the help, I'd like the Ric pickups to act like a traditional humbucker, but out of curiosity, what is different about a P-bass' pups that make them different than other buckers? Also, what do you mean by DPDT/SPDT switches?
