Well over the past 30 years or so I can state with honest joy that I have never had to play Free Bird on a gig. I considered this to be a badge of honor, kind of like never seeing a single episode of "The Voice" or "Friends". (I also hold this badge

That is until now......I have to play it next week, so I sat down to learn it. I guess I never payed attention to how interesting and cool the bass line is. I am actually really excited to play this: )! Take a listen to the iso track.

I grew up in north Carolina and can say I loath that song. I have never liked it. For a while there was a rock station in Phoenix that you could set your watch to Freebird. It played at 1530 every day.

There's a lot of seriously good bass work-outs in the Lynyrd Skynyrd songbook.
I've only ever been in one band that actually covered Freebird, and I'll admit I certainly never got near note-for-note perfection, partly because nobody else in the band was trying either.

I don’t understand the snobbery on this song. It’s beautiful and has great parts from all musicians on the track. To each his own, I happen to love it and when my band has played it we tear the house down with it because our guitar players are awesome. So much energy.

I'll wager that the dislike for the song stems more from decades of people obnoxiously yelling out its title at inopportune times than from the song itself.

Go back to the late 70s, and it was more of a bar band standard that Brown Eyed Girl and Mustang Sally combined. Add in the fact that it's long, and most bands hacked the @$-&#@@$* out of it.

Back in my early 80's bar band days Freebird was always our closing song. Ed King's bass playing on Skynyrd's first album was superb.

For me, it's a bit like Stairway, I don't need to ever hear it again.

I was at a friends Band practice last weekend and they were trying out a new keyboard player, she said how about freebird. To my and the bands amazement, they all knew it note for note, but had never discussed playing it before. They nailed the whole thing. I was highly impressed for them never playing it before.
